Bamberg, Germany in 2010 – Part 1, Scenes of the City

Bamberg is a town in Upper Franconia, Germany, on the river Regnitz close to its confluence with the river Main. The town dates back to the 9th century, when its name was derived from the nearby Babenberch castle. Cited as one of Germany's most beautiful towns, its Old Town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993, with Bamberg being home to Europe's largest intact old city wall. Bamberg lost its independence in 1802, following the secularization of church lands. Hence becoming part of Bavaria in 1803. I am covering the city with 2 sets: this set, Part 1, is just of various city scenes. Part 2 will be of the Bamberg Cathedral, and a link to that set will appear at the end of this one.

Were you able to experience the local rauch bier [smok’ed beer]? We did in 1985, my niece said it tasted like tree bark... But, all-in-all, the Czech Beer we had in 1983 was worse, it tasted like coal...

AlanD, I don't drink beer (or any other alcohol) except for rare celebratory occasions (like weddings). Thanks for viewing my photos of Bamberg.

srfmhg, I appreciate you nice comment. I'm glad you liked it. Do check out Part 2 (link at the bottom of this set).

Thank you very much. There was an earlier set about Bamberg by another Hog. I tried to pick photos different from the ones in that set.

Nice set of an interesting town, David.

Spent an evening there in 2016 and actually I am just putting the finishing touches on my series of albums from the North European Plain, which trip ended in Bamberg. Unfortunately, I got on that trip a very bad throat infection up in Poland and was more dead than alive when making the last overnight stop in Bamberg - but that's another story!

Nice set of pictures and appreciated you sharing them.
Wasnt there a US military base in or near Bamberg during the 60/70 era?

jaymatt, nice to hear from you. I'm pleased you enjoyed my pictures! You're welcome.

Thanks, nimbushopper! I tried to post photos of places the earlier posts had not.

JimBart, thanks so much and you're welcome. Yes, Warner Barracks was a United States Army military base in the city of Bamberg, Bavaria, southern Germany. There is a Wikipedia article about it:
