From the photo it could be a chestnut. If the it has a single small black nut shaped like an acorn it would be a chenkapin. https://search.aol.com/aol/search?q=chenkepin&s_it=loki-

Wild And Edible. Chinkapin Nut, it a staple for southern wildlife.

This is the fruit of a Chinese Chestnut (Castanea Mollissina). Spiky little devils. The Chinese Chestnut is much more resistant to the Chestnut Blight that virtually wiped the American Chestnuts. I believe the fruit is edible but have never tried one myself.

I Believe a horse chestnut is also known as a conker and is not edible.

I go with chestnut - as a youngster back in '45 I remember going out with mom to gather then - there were many trees around the outskirts of Jackson, CA that had been planted by immigrants during the CA Gold rush - as was in another post a blight came thru wiping them all out. Oh - those husks were like cactus when dry.
