Workflow question

I have subscribed to Adobe’s plans and have Lightroom (LR) and Lightroom Classic ( LRC). I currently import new photos to Lightroom and post process there. Lightroom Classic is unused at the moment. I also have a SmugMug subscription. A few questions :

1. Is there any advantage to keeping both LR and LRC? I find LR very flexible, easy to use and the ability to sync across devices is awesome. Are there some capabilities in LRC that are ‘better’? Should I be using both ?

2. I am seeking recommendations on implementing an optimal workflow that allows me to
- import photos and post process them
- have them accessible across devices
- have the ability to select some photos and post them on SmugMug to share with friends and family.

At the moment. - I’m unsure what role LRC should / could play. Nor am I sure how to keep LR and LRC in sync. Lastly, I’m also not sure what’s the easiest way to post into Smug Mug from LR or LRC.

Grateful for suggestions.

Adobe’s names for the three working programs is confusing.

I call them:

Lightroom Classic: your photo management system on your PC.

Lightroom Mobile: viewing and light editing on phones and tablets.

Lightroom Web: I learned of this only a few days ago.

Thank you. Do you have suggestions relating to my questions?

LrC is the more professional editing tool. Most independent pros base the rest of their workflow around that. It was designed by pro photographers for pros.

That was a suggestion. Sorry you do not understand.

Yes I understand that LRC is the more professional editing tool. But if I use LrC as my main platform for editing, is there an easy way to sync that to LR so that I have access to my photos across all my devices ?

Our resident Adobe guru, Bill Sprague, should address that question.

I know it’s possible, for those who need or want it.

It seems easy enough. I know there are photos ftom classic that appear on my phone when I open Lightroom app, but I just thought it was magic, once you turn sync on you either call a collection synced or not. I haven't looked at it too deeply.

Whatever you do in Lightroom is in the cloud, in Lightroom Classic you turn on cloud sync, and all files are available.

Since Lightroom is cloud-based, and if you are an active Photographer, you will blow through the free cloud storage in no time. I imported ½ days RAW files from a Fuji X-T30, and I am already at 17 Gb of my free 20 Gb cloud storage.

No thanks, I'll stick to LRC

Actually, you can sync a single folder from Lightroom Classic to the cloud. For example I have a “mobile” folder that is synced to Adobe cloud, when I shoot an image on my iPad or iPhone, using Lightroom Mobile, the images are on both my iPad and my iPhone within a minute or two as well as my desktop in Lightroom Classic in my mobile folder. Place an image in my mobile folder on my desktop and it ends up also on my iPhone and my iPad within a few minutes.

Having over 60,000 images I hardly want them on everything, but never needing to import images from my iPad or iPhone is handy - once the synced images are edited on any device, they are updated everywhere as well.

Yes. As I noted, that is what Lightroom Mobile does. Also you can use Lightroom Web. It seems about the same capability. Whatever you synch goes to both. The difference between these two is that you can use Lightroom Mobile off-line. And you can access Web from any computer without the App.

I believe your originals remain on your computer with Lightroom Classic. It may copy originals to the cloud for those you synch with collections. But I suspect you are looking at previews with Mobile and Web. You can edit them and the changes will synch back to Classic.

I don’t think so. I believe only Collections told to synch (lightening bolt to left of Collection name) are synched to the cloud.

This link, from above, is pretty good: https://www.lightroomqueen.com/lightroom-cc-vs-classic-features/. It gives a comparison.

But she isn’t clear that it is only Collections that synch, not all the photos in your operating catalog. And that only one catalog can synch. Also she doesn’t clarify that the “Lightroom ecosystem” is really two things: the Mobile App and the Web service.

Can you synch a folder directly? I am of the impression it only synchs Collections (in Classic, called Albums in Mobile).

Also there is a thing called “Portfolios” which I haven’t understood yet.
