I gave my four and a half grand child a point and shoot camera this year. She loves it. It cost around $80. She shoots and my daughter sends me the SD card. I print some ,mount them on paper for an album she has. I also have a category for her on my web site: plaursenphoto.com. She loves to take pics once in a while. She takes good care of it.

I am writing to tell you one that I don't think you should get. I just bought my little granddaughter a Fujifilm Instax mini instant camera. It came with all the stickers and matching pink "album" for the polaroid type photos that pop out and develop, so this is what she wanted. The pictures might be 1 1/2" by 3", 10 in a film pack. Main problem is the viewfinder. It's extremely small and without much patience yet she was struggling with either eye to line anything up. She often hit the shutter release before the camera was pointe anywhere near the intended target. I guess the only think I could see that parents might like about it is that they dont have to download and print photos from their computer.

Nikon makes a great one at $156
It is called a Coolpix 100 and has a zoom lens.

From the BH Photo pic I couldn't tell - if you're going to give a 6 yo a camera that covers the lens when it's off. Little fingers can seriously smudge an exposed lens on a turned off camera. I like my canon ELPH that covers the lens when it's turned off.

Wow, thanks to all. Lots of great suggestions. Now all I have to do is sift through them and make a decision. Decisions, decisions, decisions. And all I wanted to do was something nice for the kid! ;-)

I got my son one of the Instax cameras when he was 7. He still uses it, though not as much. He really enjoyed being able to see his photos right away. He is 10 now. This is what I got him, though in a dark blue color:

6 as in six years? If his parents wouldn't give / allow a phone, why would an uncle get involved with a camera? Fisher-Price probably has some plastic pretend models.

That is not a great solution to encourage some learning. There are so many to meet this need and they will have some lens scratch protection and they won't care about the screen.
