I have a Canon 1200D body and a Canon 100-400 EF zoom.
I want to purchase a 1.4x extender but im not sure its compatible with the lens/body
Any help gratefully received
David
With the extender and this EOS model, you will not retain autofocus with the extender installed. See the comment box at the bottom of page 96 of your manual.
ok thanks for that, i was assured it would work with auto, but you obviously know better thanks for the assistance

Paul, alias CHG_CANON is our Canon expert.
Hi ive just fitted the extender and lens to a borrowed 5D, all works fine, so its the 1200D that isnt compatible

Don't confuse physically connecting with fully-functional. Recognize too the differences in AF performance the different EOS models.
When the 100-400L is extended to 400mm, this variable aperture lens has a maximum aperture of f/5.6. With an 1.4x extender, this is reduced to an f/8 configuration at an effective 560mm. In the old days, only the EOS 1-series models could retain autofocus at f/8, and even then, only via the center AF point. But now in today's EOS line, the ability to autofocus at f/8 has been extended down to even the EOS T7i.
Before purchasing an extender for an EOS 1200D, these subtle issues should be investigated and confirmed if you desire an extended 560mm configuration that also retains the camera's autofocus.
Thanks Paul
I bought from someone that confirmed it was working fine on his body (5d) so i stupidly assumed it worked on my 1200D, my mistake, it looked OK in the compatibility chart, just not the body, but i didnt know this
One option for consideration is the Kenko Teleplus HDPro 1.4X extender. It doesn't electronically change the signaled aperture, so the camera thinks the aperture is the reported lens aperture.
As such it will allow focusing at the effective f/8 aperture on an f/5.6 lens.
It doesn't alter the real effects of an extender - reduced light and slower AF, but it does work. And when I compare with my Canon 1.4X I don't notice a quality difference.

Hi i actually bought a kenko teleplus pro 300 before the canon version, now i have 2 that wont work on my eos 1200d
It works with a T6s. I wonder why it won't work with your camera. I'll have to look at the spec differences.
I have also tried both extenders on a 5D mk2 and a mk3, all working on the mk3not the mk2, i have fiddled with the settings on the mk 2 but cant get autofocus
Interesting. It also worked on peripheral focus points on my 1D X when the Canon version wouldn't.
Does yours say "1.4X DGX for Canon EF mount" opposite the Kenko nameplate?
I think it works, it just is manual focus. I've heard of a hack where you tape off certain contacts in the extender to fool the camera into trying to autofocus. Not sure I'd try it myself.
its says Kenko C-AF made in Japan

"Working" and usable may be two different and significant things !
