Good Afternoon,

Here's the question:

When using the MB-D17 to have a 2nd battery available, does the D500 'automatically' switch to the second battery? Or is a user action necessary?

The switch is automatic. No user action necessary. You will not be aware when the switch occurs.

D500 manual, page335: battery order
You can select which battery is used first. I set mine to use the battery in the grip first. That nattery is easier to change quickly.

Thanx. I HAD checked the manual before posting and the manual did not address whether user intervention was required to activate the change in battery source. Replies tend to be more useful if you actually read the post containing the question.

I have two different OEM grips and IIRC no mention is made of how to manually switch between source batteries, leaving the user to assume that this implies that no user intervention is needed. IOW I agree with you that there is no clear and distinct assurance that it’s an automatic feature.

OTOH using it without clear knowledge does no harm cuz it will happen without need of user action, so I suppose thaz the rationale for not emphatically informing a user of something the user does NOT need to pay any mind.

Think about that last thing. Modern gear does a zillion things without user action. If the documentation were to point out all of these functions the manuals wound be even bigger and more cluttered and confusing. You might be wading through such a user manual asking “why do I hafta keep reading all this info about things I DON’T need to know or do ?”.

Kinda damnt if you do and damnt if you don’t when writing the user manuals.

With Nikon, the camera's Setup menu provides the instructions. You choose which battery to use first - the camera's or the grip's. There is al a menu option to check the batteries conditions
