HI All:

i am looking for a photo backpack, that will carry a dslr and maybe two lenses, also a day supply of water and food. i would also like to carry my tripod on it. Do you have any good packs that you are now using that you like?

I recently purchased the Mindshift Backlight 26L. It will easy carry the items you listed. If that pack is too large, they make a smaller pack in the line (18L).

Look at Atlas Athlete. A bag designed and built by a photog for exactly what you're doing.

I went with the Vanquest Ibex 20 (now only available as a 26), the Hazard4 lens case, the Thinktank holster20 and peak design camera clip. The ibex has the molle attachments so it’s set up to accommodate a tripod.

I have a canon 7D, an 18-200 and a 100-400 lens. The 100-400 goes in the Hazard4 and lays crosswise on the bottom of the pack. The thinktank holster with the camera/small lens goes in on top.

Vanquest makes an actual camera pack that my daughter uses but it was not nearly as comfortable to carry as the Ibex. The Ibex has less organization but I added the adjustable Vanquest bottle holders to the sides and inside there is still room for a small lunch.

Good protection for my stuff was a priority as I am hiking, around livestock and on an atv. It actually works quite well. If I’m hiking I carry the camera in the holster outside the pack. If I’m am using the camera I use the camera clip and the camera is tucked next to my arm and easy to protect. If I want the long lens ready the hazard4 can take a shoulder strap or Be attached to the side with the Molle.

If things change like they often do around livestock, or my hiking turns into crawling through brush and over logs everything is well protected and can be put away into the one pack. Same if I go to the ATV. Like I said, protecting my stuff had to be a priority. This protects everything against impact and weather.

The thinktank holster will hold the camera with either lens. The huge disappointment is when you expand it the long lens it has absolutely no protection. I have thought of various ways to add protection but then I would have to take it out and deal with it when I go back to the short lens.

And, this was the only set up where I could put everything in the same pack when I needed to. And since the hazard4 can take a shoulder strap or attach to the outside of the pack I can still have my long lens handy.

I have used it a lot now and it’s the best I can come up with for my situation.

Additional comment: I just checked out the atlas pack that was suggested in another post. Very nice, but I want to be able to carry a couple of small tools and lunch and it doesn’t work for me to have my food or small tools and camera stuff in the same open compartment. This was one of the main reasons I chose a regular backpack over a camera pack.

I like F-stop backpacks (https://fstopgear.com). You can pick ICU of different sizes that match your needs.

Check out Shimoda Action X bags as well. They also use an ICU and have a lot of cool features. That being said, Hunt's Photo currently has some great deals for the older Shimoda Explore series bags. I think the features of the Action X are better, but maybe not enough to make up for the price difference with the Hunt's deal. You can check out YouTube for videos. Mark Denny has a video comparing the Shimoda Explore to an Atlas bag and a F-Stoppers bag- https://youtu.be/o0j8W60nv94 Nick Page has at least one video on both the Shimoda Explore and the Shimoda Action X and currently uses the Action X.

Have you looked at the backpack inserts from Amazon? They are very little money, come in two sizes or more and they work great.
I have a smaller one for my day back and one for a larger pack. They protect your gear fine and what I like is they allow you lots of options. Check them out.

My go-to photo backpack is the LowePro Photosport BP 300 AW II. It has two main compartments and a couple of smaller pockets. One of the main compartments is padded and sized to hold one full-frame camera with attached lens (E.g., Nikon D850), plus another lens (e.g., 70-200 mm F4), and the other is to hold food, jackets, etc and could hold another lens or body, if needed. Importantly, it has a sleeve for a hydration pack (it could also hold a small laptop or tablet). It is very stable and comfortable to wear on the body, and I have carried it skiing, hiking, biking, etc. with no issues. It also is airline compatible and fits under the seat. I also have a smaller version, which works well with DX bodies, but holds less stuff. It has more features, but I have been very happy with mine for several years now.

The Think Tank Airport Commuter should more than meet your needs.

I used to use a lowepro sling bag. It was ok on glad ground but not in the hills. I now use a newer back pack and love it.

I like using a good quality hiking pack and individual sleeves/holders for my lenses and camera. I do have a number of "camera" backpacks but find they don't have room for food, water and clothes. I put my tripod in the middle - vs strapped to the back which pulls me off balance. (I have a big tripod.)
