I've never accomplished this either but you can export the file out of Photoshop and Import to Lightroom... But I'm sure you had hoped for more of a solution?

I just tried it. Here is what I did using Lightroom Classic:

(1) Right Click thumbnail -> Edit in Adobe Photoshop
Choose: Edit a copy
Choose: Use embedded profile
(2) Edit in Photoshop 2020
(3) Save on my Computer
Note: Saved Filename has -untitled.psd in it.
(4) Back to Lightroom (Still open) now there are two images in a stack. One has the name -untitled.jpg

Unfortunately they are virtually identical, the changes don't show up. So it was a failure. So that is what not the way to do it. But it did put an image in LR.

Did you check to see if you had a stacked image in LR after saving in PS?

For what is is worth, I don't usually open the image in PS, from LR. I usually open it in PS, edit, and save then import to lightroom.

But there is a way to do what you want. Someone will advise the correct method.

Just close the image in Photoshop and you will find it in Lightroom...likely as a tif.

When I do that, the problem comes if I start from a collection. The Lightroom/Photoshop trip keeps the newer Photoshop image in the same folder as the original but does not put it in a collection. The most likely for me is after a fresh import because I'm looking at it in the automatic recent import collection. If I work out of a folder, the trip to Photoshop and back to Lightroom works fine.

If all else fails.....

When in Photoshop Save or Save As the image file. Unless you do something different, it will be in the same folder as the original.

When back in Lightroom find the image you started with, go to that folder, right click the folder and select Synchronize Folder.

From the link:
"Once happy the return trip is very easy. Simply select File Save from the Photoshop menu. You will see that the file name of the image will automatically change to include a -edit suffix. "

For some reason that did not work when I tried it. Oh well. Maybe it will work for you.

You just hit 'save' under 'File', not 'save as', no new name nothing just 'save' the new thumbnail will have an 'edit' extension added to its name.

Select image in LR and do what you plan there, go to 'Photo' > 'edit in' and select PS (do NOT close LR after it goes to PS), click on edit a copy with lightroom changes if it asks you, do your editing in PS and the just click 'save', after it finishes saving you can close PS - don't bother saving changes in PS. Your edited photo will show as a new thumbnail in LR along with the original. Unless you have it set that way it should not stack the images. If LR is stacking images then in 'Library' go to 'Photo' a bit over half way down in the drop down is 'stacking' in the sub menu that opens select 'Expand all stacks' and all your images and edited versions in that folder will be unstacked so you can see them in library mode again.

I did just hit save. Not save as. Did not change the name. It didn't work. See my steps posted above.

Anyway it's not problem for me as I don't usually go from LR to PS. I open directly in PS.

Start in LR, not in PS, then it will work, or at least it works for me and has for years.
The whole point of the two being paired is LR keeps the files organized and does a lot of the basic editing while PS is the advanced editor.
So you start in LR, send it to PS and then save back to LR and it is automatically put into its place in the organization of the folder.

I did start in LR Classic.

See the steps in my post above. I don't know why it didn't work.

But I did not (1) Change the name, (2) did not use Save As. I just used save. The image appeared in a stack in LR Classic, as a JPEG image, with the new automatically assigned name, but the changes were not visible in LR. PS updated a couple days ago. Maybe it's a new bug?

But it's ok. I don't go from LR to PS. I was doing it to try to help the OP. Not much help am I. LOL.

I routinely process images in LrC and then, from LrC, do other things in PS. When done, I hit Command-S (Mac) and Command-W (closes that window) and the image shows up in PS as a saved new version with changes. My files are saved as PSD but you can choose how you want to save files in the preferences section of LrC. Perhaps you simply did not see the changes you made as they were slight?

If you are referring to me they were not slight changes. Easily visible. I don't know what happened. But it is not a big deal to me. Thank you for the reply.

As a friend who was computer tech in the Army and medical equipment and computer tech for a major hospital put it, "Don't try to understand them, they work by Black Magic."

Or you got Murphy unset with you.
