Focus Stacked Image of a Horsefly

This is the Horsefly that I caught earlier this summer that I have been keeping in the freezer to preserve it. I wanted to check on it and thought that it would be time to stage it for a focus stacking session at 5X magnification.

UTMike, that's the tongue that they use to lap up the blood and the tooth that they use to pierce the victim which hurts like the dickens. It's all within that hairy protrusion.

I really loved the double download of the arrangement of the ommatidia. There appears to be a seam between the front half and the back half of the compound eye. Amazing! Great photography Gary.
