My D610 and its kit lens, a 28-300, never really cooperated very well. I can pick any FL and subject distance and finely adjest the AF to consistently deliver in-focus pix. Frinstintz I can adjest it to +8 and the AF result is no problem from 40 to 60mm FL for subject distances of 2 to 4 meters. Other distances and FLs will not deliver critical focus using the SLR AF system.

If the 610 had Dual FL adjustment like an 850 or a 780 I could add one more reliable combination, perhaps 190 to 220mm at 12 to 15 meters. Bottom line, this is much better ... it’s merely slightly “less worse”.

Welllll .... hey, what can we really expect from a 10:1 kit zoom anyway ? It’s bound to be somewhat compromised, right ? NO!! Not right, very wrong. There’s not a damnt thing thing out of wack with this Frankenstein’s monster lens. The faulty component is the SLR AF device. Present different FLs with their different sizes of exit pupils and different degrees of optical aberrations to that AF system and attempts to perfectly adjust the AF will call for different numeric settings in the adjustment menu ... +3 here, + 14 there, etc etc. Combine any FL from 28 to 300mm with any distance from 1 to 100 meters and get a zillion different adjustment settings.

Yet, there’s nothing “AF unfriendly” about this lens. Put it on a live view camera and it will focus perfectly at any FL at any distance, every time. Just eliminate the SLR AF system and all the AF errors go away. There’s simply nothing at all wrong with the lens.

Are you having problems with unfocused images? I have never had to fine focus adjust any of my Nikon lenses.

...yah, I'm with you, Chief. <shrug>
