I need some Hog Help! When I click on the horizontal type tool in adobe photoshop cc, click on the canvas, immediately "Lorem Ipsum" comes up before I even try to type anything. Why is this, and what must I do to eliminate so it won't happen again. Here is a photo of what I am talking about.

https://loremipsum.io/ You should be able to select whatever font you require to replace that - as that is a placeholder.

I can replace it, but first I must delete it. What is a place holder, and what is the pupose of it?

Don't know your software, in those I have used you would highlight that text and then select the font you want. Once the font is selected, even after deleting that phrase, your chosen font S/B the default.

Found on Google, bolding is mine:

"Lorem ipsum, or lipsum as it is sometimes known, is dummy text used in laying out print, graphic or web designs. The passage is attributed to an unknown typesetter in the 15th century who is thought to have scrambled parts of Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum for use in a type specimen book."

Well, I went into the preference box, and removed the "placeholder text " associated with the type tool. I solved my problem, thank you for telling me about placeholders, quixdraw.

Glad you got your problem solved. But apart from all of the attempts to give it significance, the phrase is a very useful way to quickly assess a typeface for appearance and readabiity. Check it out...uppercase letters, lowercase letters. Straight letters, curved letters. Letters with "descenders." And the letters "m" and "n"are important in printing...they define the width of "en"s and "em"s, two important dimensions in the size and spacing of type.

Later this year, my kids will each be creating an original typeface to be used in the creation of marketing materials. One of the things they will be doing to test it for appearance is to print a page filled with repetitions of this phrase and checking for balance and white space and similar characteristics.

You don't have to delete it. As soon as you start typing it will disappear in favor of your typing.

If you want a translation, there's one at https://lipsum.com/

Exactly. It's quite similar to what happens in most software design for type such as graphics or word processing software. Usually some idiot who knows little or nothing about fonts and their uses is the offender who puts the name of his (because a woman wouldn't do such a thing) favorite font in the software as the default and most people don't know they can even just change it.

For example, in gmail or a PowerPoint equivalent, I often write instructions to myself and put them on the very first page, immediately after I open the file, in slightly larger type and in some bloody red font that I use only for that purpose. That's to remind me to remove the offensive text before I ship it off for comments or proofreading. I then have my slides or text in my personally preferred font(s) for the text of the slides or document. As a trained cartographer for example, I will never use a serif font on a map (having had thousands of poorly designed maps pass by my eyes while I was cataloging them at the Library of Congress).

One of the worst offenders is ten point Times New Roman which has recently been replaced by ten point Arial in a certain well-known software package (still illegible in my view).

It is an indicator. Adobe and others have used the Lorem Ipsum gibberish/scrambled/fake Latin as placeholder text in applications written since the mid-1980s. But it has been around the world of typography since the 1500s, and probably originated as real Latin from Cicero. It is used so designers know to replace it with real copy after using it to evaluate font choice, paragraph styles, page look/feel/flow, etc. Go to https://loremipsum.io to generate it for your own use. This came from there:

Conveniently, it may be used by fundamentalist AM radio preachers who "speak in tongues" while anointing their believers with rancid canola oil and lifting cash from their wallets.

While discussing readability compare a David Busch camera bible to a Darrell Young. I’ve got both and Busch’s publisher uses a roman book font but Young’s uses a sans serif screen font. The Busch books are eyeball friendly while the Young books are fatiguing to read.

Both writers write clear but very “dense” content. It’s the density of this type of info that makes the font choice significant. For a “fluff” essay, or any other sort of “light reading”, font choice would hardly matter. Young’s publisher has put style above function in choosing a book font.

Besides all the great technical info, having those words, or any words, in a text box reminds you that you have a text box there.
