IMO close crop vs. wider view (which can be about color contrast as you suggest, RJM, or the surroundings/context) should be determined by what you want to share and show.
I like this photo's composition, but I am curious what a whiter/brighter flower (not much, just a skosh) would do for the look.
ps - Six out of the most recent nine of Old Hippy's are
not close crops. What I think of when his name is mentioned is his frequent use of black or very dark backgrounds, which make for striking artistry.

Not necessarily. It depends on personal taste, subject, etc. For this one, I like the looser crop, Bob, and it's a lovely image!
