Couple of years now since I found Ugly Hedgehog – I read the posts nearly everyday – view the photos – make the occasional comment – post the occasional pictures.

From all this I believe I’ve learned now what’s best in the world of Photography and feel I can share this knowledge with everyone!

1. Film is better than digital (even when scanned & digitised)
2. Digital is better than film.
3. Black & white is better than colour.
4. Colour is better than black & white.
5. Full frame is better than crop sensors than M4/3 than 1” than point & shoot.
6. Crop sensor is better than Full frame than M4/3 etc etc
7. M4/3 is better than all the rest.
8. Point & shoots don’t get another mention.
9. DSLR’s are better than mirrorless.
10. Mirrorless are better than DSLRs
11. One zoom lens is better than 3, 4 or 5 prime lenses
12. One prime lens is much better than any zoom lens.
13. The more expensive a camera is the better will be the images.
14. The bigger and more expensive a lens is the better will be the images.
15. White lenses are better than black lenses.
16. Black lenses are better than white lenses.
17. Its better to shoot RAW than jpeg (and tell everyone you only shoot RAW)
18. Its better to shoot jpeg than RAW (and don’t tell anyone you do)
19. Its better to post process than adjust in camera (and you must use Photoshop/Lightroom)
20. Its better to shoot SOOC than RAW then you can’t post process properly

There are other issues I don’t yet have a complete handle on – smart phones, BBF, expose to the left/right/centre, Bokeh etc etc. but I’m sure when I do understand it all I’ll take much better photographs. I might even post some.

Every one is both right and wrong at the same time. There is no best.

It has taken me longer than it has taken you but I am inclined to agree with all of your points

Excellent list, made me smile! May I add, don’t waste your time tuning lenses and you should always tune your lenses, and how about always use a UV filter to protect your glass and don’t waste your money on protective filters as all they do is totally destroy image quality.

The very best camera is the one She Who Must Be Obeyed gave permission to waste your half of the retirement fund on.

Nice summary. That’s a good start!

On UHH you get:
(1) expert advice
(2) strong conflicting opinion
(3) completely wrong answers

It’s up to the reader to sort them all out.

Truthfully people here have saved my butt more than once when there were things I couldn’t figure out.

As far as what is best ... it’s really about what works best for you.

And if you need someone to tell you how to spend your money you have definitely come to the right place.

For those who don't know me- I'm a long-time professional photographer. I started my career over 56 years ago as a gofer/apprentice/ and trainee in a New Yor City studio that specialized in portraiture and mostly weddig phototherapy. My first boss and mentor was a great shooter and a very dogmatic teacher. Incidentally, he recently passed away well into his 90s and was still shooting when he was in his 80s.

So...Harry was a traditional photographer with a stable full of young, eager, creative, artsy trainees with "fancy ideas". In wedding photograhy there was no space for mistakes, stepping too far out of the box, and breaking away from procedures. When Harry instructed us there was lots of "Never do this, never do that, do what I tell you and after you actually know what you are doing, we'll talk about that (whatever)"

Harry was consistent, kind, and patient but we were a bunch of young "smartasses" and sometimes one of us woud say "...so Boss, what would happen if we did..." one of his never dos! He woud calmly explain the technical ramifications but after the 3rd or 4th challenge or rhetorical question, he would look the questioner in the eye and calmly say "I'll come to your house under the cover of darkness and murder you in your sleep! Well...we never called the police- we got his mixture of the loss of patience, sense of humor, and sarcasm!

Whenever I read some of the items and arguments in the OP's brilliant list, I think of Harry and restrain my urge to join the conversatio with a hyperbolic answer.

You seem to have the best grasp of all the nuances of photography than anyone posting here. Admin should post this on the front page and then simply eliminate the rest of the forum! Thanks for sharing.
