First off, your quote is incorrect. Second, Jefferson spoke of s***ery as a “moral depravity” and a “hideous blot,” he believed that s***ery presented the greatest threat to the survival of the new American nation. Jefferson also thought that s***ery was contrary to the laws of nature, which decreed that everyone had a right to personal liberty.
Jefferson freed many s***es while living, more at his death, and did not pursue s***es which fled Monticello. The s***es Jefferson kept were, for the time, treated quite benevolently and were kept because he felt they were the least likely too be self sustaining in the US south. As horrible as some of that sounds, it is an injustice to judge someone against a time in which they did not live.
Third, s***ery was a sin on US history which we inherited from the British ... which you fled to be with, which makes this conversation quite hypocritical and trolling on your end of it ... we which had to figure a way out of.
Fourth, yes the photo-democrats ... Virginians, Carolinians, Georgians etcetera ... wanted all the benefits of a new and free nation, but refused to join unless their r****t hatred was sated. It was a devil's compromise, but Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Jay, Hamilton et al wanted to end s***ery then and there.
