What the declaration said was: We hold these t***hs to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

Second, Jefferson spoke of s***ery as a “moral depravity” and a “hideous blot,” he believed that s***ery presented the greatest threat to the survival of the new American nation. Jefferson also thought that s***ery was contrary to the laws of nature, which decreed that everyone had a right to personal liberty.

Jefferson freed many s***es while living, more at his death, and did not pursue s***es which fled Monticello. The s***es Jefferson kept were, for the time, treated quite benevolently and were kept because he felt they were the least likely too be self sustaining in the US south. As horrible as some of that sounds, it is an injustice to judge someone against a time in which they did not live.
