I am a PS user. Just recently my grandson has taken an interest in using my equipment for photography. He is self teaching himself PS 2020 on my desktop and of course wants it on his laptop. since I rent the program from Adobe, I think I can put it on his laptop as well as long as both of us are not trying to use simultaneous.

My question is. In the cheaper realm or the free open source realm, i know there are many programs that do the same as PS but which on ( even if I have to buy) is laid out similar to PS so when he is at my house the program on my system looks at least similar to what I would get for him?

Thanks All
David

Here's a link for GIMP (free) and modifying it to look and feel like PS:

Warning: I use GIMP in it's native state and haven't used Photoshop in almost 20 years, so I don't know how accurate this is.

PS CC can be installed on 2 devices (and used) at the same time. More than two and the program asks for one license to be released.

Bite the bullet and get him his own PS subscription. You can always cancel it if he looses interest.

It is unclear if you mean Photoshop cc, the 9.99 subscription one, or Photoshop elements 2020, on sale now for $60 one time cost. Either way you can load on 2 computers but only use it on one at a time. If it is Photoshop elements 2020, I'd spend $60 and gift him his own software. Call it Christmas. If it is the subscription I'd gift him $9.99 a month for six months to see if he is really still interested enough to spend his own $9.99 a month.

Either way I wouldnt waste the interest he is showing, and I would stick with Photoshop because it is the king of, you know, photoshopping things. I wouldn't tie one hand behind his back with Gimp or other free offerings. Like it or not Photoshop is the standard and the market leader that everone else has to compete with and is a skill that is worth something in our graphic oriented workplaces.

If a kid wants to play the trumpet we rent a trumpet and pay for the lessons without complaining. Same idea. Education costs money sometimes.

That just simply isn't an accurate statement. I try very hard to make impartial statements about GIMP, Darktable, etc... as to make sure whoever reads understands that software is only as good as the person using it, and not all software fits everyone's wants or needs. Please do not think that just because one uses "GIMP or other free offerings" that it is substandard by any mark of the imagination.

I have seen very good AND very bad usage of your "Flagship Adobe" products, some of which I have run circles around with my freeware offerings.

If he enjoys Adobe, and it's easier to learn because others in the family use it that is awesome and others have provided the OP with great suggestions that are fantastic. I hope it works for the OP. But don't discount others' suggestions because we are "less than chosen" for not choosing the flagship products.

Thanks all. I decided to load PS cc 2020 on his laptop. If he sticks with it incan rent it I need the second license. Seems he refuses to use auto focus in favor of manual so not many shots arnfocused but many are (young eyes vs grandpa and his progressive lenses) and so far loving it.

Awesome, glad you found your solution!

Don't forget that there are some significant student discount plans from Adobe. I was shocked when my sister told me she footed the full Creative Cloud (21 apps) for her 'creative' granddaughter. It cost her $20 or $30 a month. The kid got good at being 'creative'. My sister now has to help fund the tuition at one of the best 'creative' art colleges in the country. It is one that Disney founded near Hollywood!

Uh, Disney (nor Hollywood) isn't anywhere close to Lake Ontario. Sorry, I had to (somewhat) defend the Red Brick City in the town with the yellow box. However, the winter weather *is* much nicer on the left side of the coast.

Affinity is a good choice and get the book to go along with it. Put it on your machine also and have him teach you what a modern program will do. yes to many Adobe is GOD... but in reality, it is old programing with patches while Affinity was developed over a 5 year period about 7 years ago and has been updated free of charge.

Gimp is also a very good choice... OpenSource.

Spending money on Topaz plugins is also wise. Kiss PS good by.

Go, modern Grandpa.

With your Adobe Photoshop CC subscription you can have the program on two different computers. I have the subscription and my wife and I both use the program at the same time on two different computers. When we travel, we logout of one program and login on the laptop. When we get back home, we logout of the laptop Photoshop program and log back in on the desktop. No problems.

I was thinking more that the op said the grandkid had a start with photoshop, and has access to the network of support and training Photoshop and so many 3rd parties have, and it's a bond with granddad because they have the shared experience.

I'm sure I could figure GIMP out or any other program because there is likely very common tool sets and approaches to raster editing that an experienced person could easily recognize (pixels are pixels after all), but a beginner who could have the chance to be guided in learning the industry standard might be better off sticking with the one program rather than starting in on a new system.
