Released in Sep 2012, This tool checks your computer for infection by specific, prevalent malicious software (including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom) and helps to remove the infection if it is found. Microsoft will release an updated version of this tool on the second Tuesday of each month.
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=16

Microsoft does not charge for this tool and neither does it charge for the Microsoft Security Essentials to guard against viruses, spyware, and other evil software. It provides real-time protection for your home or small business PCs.

Microsoft Security Essentials is free* and we designed it to be simple to install and easy to use. It runs quietly and efficiently in the background so you don't have to worry about interruptions or making updates.

I use both and have for months now without any problems. I have removed Norton Anti-Virus and saved big bucks and slow running computer.

I have tried a number of programs that detect and remove malware etc. Microsofts downloads dont seem to pick up the trojans fast enough. I even downloaded a copy of spyhunter. I have lost the use of my machine for over a day with these things. I was never a fan of Norton, But I cant believe how good it works on my HP notebook. It detects malware and removes the viruses every time without any hassle. My machine is superfast and has not slowed down a bit.

I agree. I use Microsoft Security Essentials on mine with regular scans by Malwarebytes AntiMalware and CCleaner.

Will NEVER have Norton on my computers!! TOO many problems.

When I had security essentials and Spyhunter4 installed on my last computer, scans were run on a regular basis. Adware and other low priority worms were removed or quaranteened easily. Malware and trojan horses were missed. Did anyone encounter the one that morphed so quickly nothing could keep up with it. It kept warning of all kinds of realistic sounding errors, hard drive, system register. THe only way to fix these false notifications was to by their software. I had shut down and restart in safe mode. Then I would remove the malware there. Sometimes this took a few hours. Could someone tell me what thier problem with Norton is.

When Peter owned Norton Antivirus it couldn't be beaten but as soon as he sold it . . .

It is currently on my two computers but was a mistake to try it again (turns a powerhouse into a 286, immediately)... come on 41 more days to replace and then nevermore.

I've used several anti-virus, malware, trojan and other detection tools with varying results. I agree for a while Symantec (Norton) grabbed resources (both CPU and RAM) so badly that my system slowed down completely.

But the last couple revs have improved dramatically, and reviews have improved of the product. I even run the Apple version on my MacBook Pro, along with the Windows version on my wife's desktop. With Win7 and Mac OS X, I think Symantec is a good buy; for me at least.

Several years ago Norton was highly touted. I bought the Norton system and worked ok the first year, so I reenlisted online for a second term. During that time Norton kept adding bloatware to the point where my work was continuosly being interupted by something Norton was doing.
And to rub insult to injury I was automatically renewed for another year without notification. When time came for renewal I downloaded Microsoft Security, deleted all Norton software and informed Norton to delete my account, and haven't had a problem in the 3 years I've changed over.
So many of these pay programs perform functions that are already in the OS it makes one wonder just what are they offering for $29.99.
Goodbye Symantec, good riddance.

I have Microsoft Security essentials as well on all my machines but I also found that AVG's definitions and antivirus has come in handy. I use the subscription version for all my machines as well as the AVG PC Tuneup program to elliminate all the registry errors. I don't consider $60 every 2 years for 3 machines as a huge expense and only $30 for the Tuneup program. That's a lot cheaper than some other antivirus programs and the customer service has been excellent.
By the way, any time you change from one antivirus vendor to another, you absolutely need to remove all of the old program. A computer with 2 antivirus programs besides Microsoft, will have serious conflicts as one program detects the other one as a threat or intrusion. It will either halt or slow your machine to a crawl.
JMHO.

I use AVG and Auslogics Boost Speed. Can't tell you how faster the box is now after running the Boost Speed. The MS malware program messed me up so bad, I try not to download it any more.

This downloadable software is a good tool. However, one has to go into BIOS and reset one's computer to start from the CD vice starting from the hard drive. Right now I am just not comfortable going into BIOS with specific detailed step by step instructions.
