Do you routinely shake all your electronic devices? TVs, toaster ovens, clocks, computers? I’m just wondering why you would deliberately shake your lens? Just curious.

I repair these for a living and the #1 cause of damaged VR units is shaken baby syndrome. If things aren't locked down, and they should be automatically when the lens is off the camera, the surface of the electro magnets can get scratched. this can ruin the VR unit. Make sure you turn it off before you remove it from the camera. This should lock down the lens and save it from damage.

I've noticed in VR lens manuals stating to turn VR OFF before removing the lens, which I usually forget to do. I often wondered why it was necessary. Your statement makes a lot of sense (to me). Thanks. My 70-300 Nikon VR lens doesn't have a switch on the lens to turn the VR on/off. Can me done via the camera's menu. Got me wondering about that now.

I have this lens...when i first got it there was a point in the zoom where the lens had a drag....a few months into ownership i had major lens creep...sent it into Nikon to have this fixed...they replaced some parts...it is back to them now...I would not buy this lens again...i do have some really good pictures from it and have it on my camera most of the time...

Good luck with the lens
