Looked like a very small hummingbird the way it hovered and used its proboscis.

Thanks. Totally by chance, my new to me 100-400 goes everywhere I go as long as it is in my backyard.
It is indeed a humming bird moth. A clearing humming bird moth. There is another species here in Maryland called a snowberry clearing humming bird moth, it has a yellow back as opposed to the greenish one in your photo. I have a butterfly bush in my back yard and they are frequent visitors. I use my sigma 150-600 @ 600 and have gotten some great shots.
Thank you to all that replied. I guess chance favors the prepared mind, as Louis Pasteur I think said. Or chance favors the person with the big white lens.
