Standing in my driveway this morning, chatting with my neighbor, at a safe distance mind you, when out of the blue, this June Bug falls onto the driveway. Confused at first, thinking it might have been two mating as there appeared from a distance to be too many wings. Upon closer inspection, it was a GIANT HORNET that had brought down the June Bug. Ran for my camera, and by the time i got back, he had dragged the critter into the pine straw.
A bit later, cutting the grass, I spied a nice mushroom laying in a slim ray of sunlight filtered through a bunch of trees. Ran for my camera, but not 4 minutes later, the sliver of sun had moved off the mushroom. Oh well, took a picture, and ran it down with the mower.
Then another Rat snake was sneaking along my back wall. Have had a bunch of those this year, alas, not a single new bird has dropped by my yard since April.

Nice captures of the hornet.
Thanks for the clarification. Not even close to a knowledgeable bug guy. Just learned a thing or two.

Nice shots Mike. Certainly social distance from that hornet.

I also noticed you captured him from afar ... smart!
Love the mushroom pic! I can do without the snake!
Excellent work, Mike, thanks for sharing.

those cicada killers are very docile. I work around them all the time. will be gone in a few weeks. they keep a den in the ground. never heard of a sting.

This is a nice set. The hornet had killed a cicada or a katydid. I’m not sure from the bottom. The cicadas come out after hibernation in the ground for seven years depending on species.
I carry my camera everywhere. It is my “baby.” My wife yells at me when it is slung over my back and we are heading to places like the post office.
I like this set and thank you very much for sharing
