I replaced the sky with one I had taken with my cellphone then ran it through Topaz. This was actually taken at around 10:30 am. I am going to have to take better quality sky shots with my camera so I don't have to use Topaz to apply an impressionistic filter to make them play nice together.

Hi Keni,

Nice sky replacement. Very nice moody scene you've created here. But, when I look at your image a little longer, here's what I notice. First, the bright area of the sky above the red building isn't in the water reflection like the building is. You can also see the stack reflection deep into the scene but no accompanying sky. In sky reflections involving water there's generally a reflection that needs to be addressed also. Second, if you look at the stack, you see the main lighting comes from the left. The light and shadows on the red building indicates the lighting is from the front and left. But the sun in your sky replacement is behind everything in the scene. Just something to consider.

Keni I think SalvageDiver summed it up well. Many times I will take a shot of a sky with the idea of putting it in my sky library for future use. You might want to take a look at Sergie Ramelli (I hope I spelled his name correctly) on YouTube about sky replacement. It is only a few of minutes long.

I think you have a fascinating scene and composition, Keni: serenity in nature vs. industry, with great reflections in the water. For the reasons mentioned by others (and a personal one about the Impressionist result), I hope you'll come back again with a new sky and outlook

Keni - Moody, dramatic and most interesting! Apart from some of the items mentioned here, I really like the juxtaposition of the heavy industrial bilding and stack with the serenity of the surrounding area. And I thank you for the idea about using an impressionistic "look" in Topaz for the sky - hadn't thought of trying that!

Thanks Mike. I appreciate comments and I see the issues you pointed out. I think I need to find another sky for this one.

Frank I have watched several of Ramelli's tutorials and have some of his sky shots from his sky replacement tutorial. I think I just used the wrong sky on this one but I appreciate the recommendation for Ramelli. I do like his tutorials. I am in the middle of his Landscape Masterclass now.

Thanks Tommy. It's a cool location to shoot. Its a small lake in the middle of the Dallas with lots of sailboats and the Arboretum, which is another amazing place to shoot, is also there. The sun set almost directly behind that building so I guess a real sunset reshoot might be in order. With all the clouds that Hurricane Laura has blown in now would be a good time.

Hi Keni,

I think you have a great sky and a good composition. Here's my add to it, although not perfect especially to pixel peepers, but it does advance the illusion you've created.

Here's a good tutorial on sky replacements
