Just outside of Pullman, Washington, lies the abandoned Weber house. During my visit to the area, I spent a week scouring the country side looking for and finding old structures from long ago. This photo required a lot of local adjustments with the Luminar Plugin by burning in the roof, dodging the house siding, brighten the clouds while building contrast with the sky. My attempt was to show the remoteness in the farming area. I'll let you decide if I succeeded. Your thoughts? Ken

My thoughts include the following: At first blush--i.e., when first looking at the thumb--, what I see is quite an effective image. In large part, that's a result of the drama you've introduced through contrasts. But then I view the download version, and likewise the ddl, and a number of issues arise. First among those is the processing produced halo-ing that follows the horizon line, several of the trees, and carries over into the roof areas of the structures. Though sometimes somewhat time consuming, eliminating that featureless near-white couple-of-pixels-wide blank space more often than not does wonders, and not only for 'pixel peepers' who view on large monitors. Beyond that, both left and right of the farm house are areas on the land immediately below the horizon that have gone (been burned?) Zone X black. I find those areas distracting and not in keeping with the remainder of the image. I likewise wonder if portions of the house have not been overly dodged, and become overly white and lack the sort of texture I'd expect to see (apart from the lines of the lapped straking). Lastly, on ddl the image takes on a rather grainy look. Had that been your intent? Maybe to make it look like an image on film that had been push-processed or something? If so, fine, but what at first looked tight and sharp (in the thumb) begins to look soft and ill-defined at full res.

I do think its a fine image, though. I just think it could be better.

Wow photobum - there is a house out there with my name on it! - great to hear and the area has already been on my to-do list, one more reason now to head down there one of these days - if only this pandemic wouldn't be around! Great shot, I like the composition! Your fellow Washingtonian - Joe Weber

Did you succeed? Yes, definitely! It’s a great scene, and your processing os spot-on. Congratulations.

I found several houses similar when I was there, but not this one. Good catch. Most of the ones I found had weeds grown up around the house to the point where one could hardly see the building!
