It has been my practice to disconnect the battery when the camera is not in use, but reconnect every several days to recharge what has to be recharged. Now when I disconnect the battery and reconnect immediately, then turn camera ‘on’ I get a panel (that can not be bypassed) to select language and set date & time. So this camera have an internal battery for retaining settings and such. Who knows.
the internal battery charges from the main battery. leave it in the camera IMHO
Cameras like this do not have an internal battery to hold this information. They have a capacitor (or maybe a small rechargeable battery) that can hold a charge for a short time (as measured in just hours) to allow you time to change a battery with enough latitude that you can take your time doing it.
I do not take batteries out when not using a camera. Resetting all the settings and button assignments over and over would drive me insane.

With all cameras I have owned settings stay when battery is removed. I remove batteries to charge them. I put in a charged one at the same time.
But yes, he is leaving it out too long for the internal battery or capacitor.

my a6000 and a6500 do not lose settings even if the battery is out for several hours, even overnight. I don't know how it remembers settings but it does not necessarily need an internal source of energy because the "chip" inside the camera could be a rewritable non-volatile memory.
The OP's camera is not behaving normally.
I remove my battery for charging because the external charger is faster and there is no load on the camera's internal circuitry that way. The external charger is a "separately purchased" thing.

I have never left the batteries out of my Sony Cameras to find out.
But I did have an Olympus camera that the battery sat too long without recharging, and it lost all the button assignments.
I take out the batteries of Nikon D200 and 300 To make sure no leakage as camera might sit for several months.
Never have to reset.
But 4 batteries For these cameras have never leaked either so might be a waste of time .
Prior to recently I would leave the battery out for days & days and not have to re-entry language and data/time. I put this question to my local camera store and learned it would be an expensive fix, 300-500 $.
