Late I have had a lot of "not responding" issues with windows 10. Its not just internet activity, but Excel as well. Has anyone found a solution to this issue? Thanks.

I have no solution other than Windows 7 which worked well.

So... some not very helpful replies, to this point. Let me, an Apple guy, try to help. Here are some this you can check:

Do you have multiple programs open and running? Some programs don't have open windows and run as "background" processes (incidentally, every browser tab you have open is a memory suck). You can check those. Try running Task Manager (press Ctrl-Alt-Del and choose from the resulting menu). Most may be unfamiliar and you might ignore them, but if you see a program you started and thought you quit, you can close it from Task Manager. Of course, a reboot will do that, too.

Are you running out of disk space? The general rule of thumb is to keep about 10% of your total disk space free. Windows and programs write temporary files to disk, and if you don't have enough space, things can get wonky (you DON'T want to run out of space, trust me!).

Have you kept current with software updates? Despite some hiccups with updates, Microsoft usually releases patches to improve reliability and performance. Check to see if you're current.

Most computer performance problems can be traced to lack of memory, lack of disk space, or lack of CPU. There isn't much you can do about CPU, short of getting a new computer, but you can improve disk and memory performance.

Consider getting a program that will clean up your disk periodically. CCleaner is a utility that has a free version that will let you clear out caches, temp files and other cruft that gathers over time. It can free up disk space and boost performance. There are other programs that can help, too.

A little housekeeping can go a long way. Good luck.

"Excel as well. Has anyone found a solution to this issue?"

Had a similar problem and put Ofice 2007 disk in and chose repair. Worse comes to worst remove the program and do a clean reinstall.

For the general "Not Responding" problems, do an Avast trial and do a Pre-Boot Scan. Start in the early evening and it will perhaps be done by the morning. Pre-Boot-scan catches a virus that hides in programs to avoid detection. Other scans such as Malwarebytes may detect a culprit.

Thanks for the reminder, I am scanning with Malwarebytes at this moment. Also, time to do a backup in case a Microsoft W-10 update poops on my computer. I have neglected another one of my advice to others; one should have a Rollback Restore established weekly [wednesday before MS update.]

CTRL-ALT-DLT ~~> Task Manager

Click on column header for CPU usage

The CPU hog will be at the top

Anything over 10% is locking down everything else

Reboot that one program and find out why it is getting stuck

Good Luck.

This can be annoying and it is not limited to Windows 10. It happens with Windows 7 particularly when I have a lot of programs open some of which are old. I am also using Google Chrome and I'm running Norton 360 which manages a Secure VPN connection. I even have to turn VPN off and on occasionally because it can get in the way of communicating with some web sites.

I get similar interruptions with iOS on my tablet and iPhone although the messages are different and I am forced to reload the page I am viewing. This may have a different cause (too many adds being inserted into the page I am viewing) and sometimes pages take a long time to completely load.

One way I can avoid this is to reboot every couple of days. In the meantime it helps to save frequently and not keep programs open when I'm not using them.

Most users have far more programs running in the background and using up resources then they realize. Go the CTRL-ALT-DLT route as already mentioned. Select Task Manager. On the header select Start-Up. This will show you the programs that load when you start your computer and their impact on resource usage. Many can be disabled, which does not stop the program from running when needed but prevents it from starting and running in the background every time you start your computer. I check mine periodically and keep Start-Up programs to a minimum. I also keep Win 10 and my programs updated. The Win 10 updates are automatic and sometimes a bit of a nuisance when shutting down or starting up, but, I have no problems such as you describe.

I blame a lot of that on the program/feature that isn't responding. Right now, I can't get to my Spectrum mail. It just keeps loading and loading and loading.

Has this been an on-going issue or just recently started? Like others suggest hard drive space may be filling up also updates were mentioned, sometimes the updates do more harm than good. Working in the industry I have seen a lot of updates going on and its becoming an on going headache with some software

I thought some of my problems would go away when Microsoft declared that they would no longer be supporting Windows 7 after January 14th, 2020.

But they are still sending out plenty of updates for other MS products and they can take time to download and install. I still need to regularly cold-boot my computer after these updates.

Something else to watch out for, some security programs get piggybacked onto installs for unrelated software. Be sure you don't have more than one internet protection running at the same time.

Oracle’s JAVA updates are one of the worst for piggybacked resource sucking SW. after I noticed a machine idling with a CPU utilization at ~50%, I discovered that a JAVA update had installed a hidden ap to use the host (mine) I to distribute JAVA updates to other users. It was extremely pernicious, resisting all attempts to uninstall it until I finally changed the directory name and path such that the installer couldn’t reinstall it in a place where it could execute. Needless to say, even though I get an update request every time I reboot, I NEVER let Oracle install a JAVA update.
