Ring-necked Duck - Aythya collaris
This little guy was trying to get all his feathers "just so". It was late January and some ladies were in the park also getting ready for the flight north to their breeding areas. This preening of the wing is one of the common moves by the males to draw attention. He was putting on a show of diving, swimming around and preening for the females on the pond.
They are diving ducks and eat plants and small water creatures for protein while breeding.
Here in Southern California which is part of their wintering area they often pair up before starting the flight north to the breeding areas along the US-Canadian border and up into Alaska. The birds that breed in Central Canada, the Great Lakes Region and SE Canada usually winter east of the Rockies and down into Mexico and the Caribbean.
