Canon Prograf 1000 printer and ink consumption

I was considering buying the above until I read some horrendous reports of ink usage , particularly from the cleaning cycle. Having looked further I am now confused. One harsh critic , a library associated with a major university really laid in. However, looking closer it appears that very few photos were printed and the cleaning cycle would be more cost effective that a head jam.
Also some say that the clean cycle only happens as a major cost at the start and others say that it’s an automated process that happens every 60 hours.
Do any of you fellow Hoggers have experience of this issue with this printer ?
Thanks in advance

I haven't tracked ink usage, but it doesn't seem abnormally high. The ink cost based on size of the cartridges is less than that of the smaller printers like the Canon Pro-100 (which I also have). Epson makes great printers in comparable sizes, but head clogging seems to be a recurring problem.

This link will show you some of the great improvements in this printer, but I have no idea how much 12 different inks would cost.

The Canon 1000 Pro Printer has a cleaning process and a dump cartridge in the back. Yes it cleans it self and in doing so uses ink. That bothered me also. The reason I went to it was, I went to a Photo Expo that Canon was printing pictures at then show and Canon was using the Pro 1000. If they use it for a show to sell Canon products then that is the printer I should chose. And I did and no regrets.
My Camera Equipment is over 10,000, my Computer is a few thousand, The paper is $2.00 a sheet or more and I am selling my pictures because people like what I'v taken and the quality of the product. SoInk is expensive (in large cartridges) I's the cost of my hobby or sales.
This is only my opinion

I’m about ready to throw in the towel with my Epson inkjet printer. If I don’t use it for a few days, I have to run the head cleaning cycle to get decent printing. I use more ink cleaning the print heads than I do in actual printing. I’ve spent enough on ink in the last couple of years to pay for a color laser printer and a couple of toner refills. I seldom print images so most of my printing is of documents, which may include graphics. After paying $40 for a black ink cartridge at OfficeMax the other day, I see a color laser printer in my near future. I’ll be happy relying on the mail order photolabs for my image printing.

The harsh truth is that the companies that sell printers are not in the printer business They are really in the ink business

I own a pro 4000 , the 1000 2000 and 4000 do not use ink to do nozzle checks or for cleaning it uses recyclable Glycerin in a glycerin tank it is also where the head resides after shutdown or when idle . The head is sitting in glycerin at idle there is negative pressure applied to the head and ink is drawn back and glycerin is drawn into the head . At restart the glycerin is purged and the nozzles populated with ink .that is why when starting up you have to wait .. this info is from my installer and service manager and repair tech for Canon printers And also the reason my printer stays on to keep a negative pressure on the head ...heavy ink use could be from wrong paper settings for a given print media .. . The cost per ml of ink is higher than the 2000 or 4000 I am told ...

If you use the printer a lot, it needs cleaning only a little.
If it sits too long, the ink gums up and you'll need a cleaning cycle.
I have a Canon and a HP- both do very well living under covers when not being used.
