Just got a a 5D MkIII, and at home can use the EOS software to transfer files just fine.
It does not appear on the Mac as an external drive, but that is not a problem as I have the EOS utility software

But...

I am off on holiday, and won't be able to install the software on every computer I want to plug the camera in to, to take the photos off the CF card to backup to external drive/usb/ give to friends etc.

OK, other solutions are an EyeFi card, Spare CF/SD cards and a card reader, but that is all extra stuff.

So i am trying to see if there is a way to just plug the camera in to USB on PC or mac and have it appear as an external drive?

I see a Communication option in the 'My Menu ' custom functions, but it always seem to be greyed out

Canon cameras do not support mass storage mode, or at least my 30D did not, so they will not appear as a drive. A card reader is quite small and inexpensive, I think I used the USB cable once and threw it away in frustration, I found a card reader much better
