The cost of gasoline might have been 26 cent/gallon and that has obviously changed..... That is first class service. Nowadays I live in Northern California where the cities of Redding and Anderson are 11 miles apart. It takes 3 days for a letter from Anderson to come to my Redding address. The price of stamps may go up due to inflation but my feeling is that the service has taken a nosedive.
There was a clear difference in service back then in gasoline too, even labeled as "Full Service" and "Self Service".
