Vintage lens focus problem

Hello,
Once again I need your help. I have a Sakar auto mc zoom/macro 50-220 mm lens. It's 40 years old in near new condition. My husband bought it new to use on his Nikon dlsr but rarely used it. I put it on my D500 and set it up to recognize the aperture. It meters ok. However, when I try to focus at any distance except around 50mm it is blurry. I wanted to use it at further distances. I tried changing the aperture and focusing ring without success. What am I missing? Is it me or the lens? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you

If it has any sort of special control for macro you might be in macro mode. It was a style back then to “hide” macro controls. Post very clear pix of all the numbers and other markings, with the zoom ring at both extremes, so we can diagnose it.

I believe that lens does not have auto focus. It is a manual focus lens.

You might try rereading the WHOLE original posted question.

At least it’s not hidden !

It would appear that the zoom ring must be at 50mm to operate the macro ring. Pull the zoom to 50, press the silver button and rotate the ring to a hard stop by rotating to the left as viewed from the user’s viewpoint (same as posted photo). Reasonable to assume the button will pop out when you reach the hard stop.

If the ring is already locked in the non macro, normal use position, unlock and run thru the macro sector and back to normal a coupla times in case something is hung up inside. If all this doesn’t get you back to normal, do realize the value of the lens is about $15 and just move on.

It was bought for use on a DSLR before any DSLR was made?? Does not compute!!

I think the 'Auto' refers to the aperture stopping down as the shutter is released. ( not pre-set stopping down).

Only the age of the lens is stated. The actual time of purchase is not given. No need to panic.

Perhaps it would be comforting news for you to just realize that the world never really turns upside down. Whenever it seems that is happening just remind yourself that your personal take on things is usually waaaaay far removed from reality so what may seem an existential threat is pure illusion.

Hope that helps. Hope is a bottomless resource so wasting it on the hopeless is no actual loss.

If it helps you, realize that my friend Tony bought a brand new 1980’s manually operated lens for his digital camera but never really used it cuz he didn’t know how. Simple puzzle for you: Verrrry approximately, what year did Tony buy his 1980’s lens for his digital camera ?
