Reading / dozing with a book after dinner, just before dark. My wife alerted me to a bird on the waterfall - an owl, cooling its feet. Grabbed the D7200 with 200 - 500 5.6, fortunate that I had swapped out of 1800mm mode! Three shots through glass for insurance, then I circled out and around the house, shooting every few steps when the owl was in sight, activating the built in flash for the last few. Finally, the bird flew, and I "flew" back to the computer. There have only been a few times with an owl or raptor on the pond. Drat! - I hadn't reset to AF from M when I changed lenses, and it was too dark to really see focus. The last shot, by pure coincidence and because of the flash, at least dramatic.
Hey, it's not a black blob, which is what I usually get when I try that! I call that success.
Had to laugh, thought I was the only one that could do something like that but you still got an interesting photo.

A heck of a sight better than the only Owl shot I've gotten short of a Raptor show...

Thanks - lucky enough to have gotten several owls over the years, those in daylight. Living in the country, we can hear lots of owls, but see them comparatively rarely.

Nice catch quixdraw
Thanks! I do regret not doing it properly - at least half a dozen would have been memorable if in focus.

The important thing is you got it. Mental check lists are important when grabbing your camera. Mine starts with do I have a card, battery charged, exposure comp at zero depth or no depth needed.
All things considered, good catch, QD!
