I a looking for a decent tripod that can hold a D750 and Nikkor 200-500.

A Sirui T-024X Traveler Light Carbon Fiber with C-10S is listed for $229.00

A Gitzo Mountaineer 6X4 Carbon tripod without a head is listed at $500
Use in good condition, are they worth that much?
I thought I could get them for much less

I am currently looking at the Peak Design travel tripod in aluminum. They do have a carbon fiber model but I think it's a little pricey.

Gitzo is a good tripod. Good costs more because it is unlikely to fail you when you need it.

I've been using a Gitzo for almost 20 years. They are a great tripod and getting parts for them is quite easy, as well.

I've had this one for some years now and love it..handles my D500 with my Sigma 150-600mm attached...not the cheapest though and I think they are about AUD$700 here now. beautifully made like all Manfrotto stuff. Not sure what they cost where you are though...the price I paid included the ball head...

No carbon fiber and is on sale price for today only, but it looks decent and I assume you think this brand okay since that is one of the two you mention.

Slik 700 Pro DX. Aluminum, tough as nails. I've had mine for 30 years, never a problem with heavy use. About $120 these days.

I have that setup and it’s a great unit.

My heavy lens setup is an old BOGEN (MANFROTTO) 3221.

Something the OP needs to consider is how tall they are, more specifically how high their eye level is from the ground.

This is a critical measurement for a heavy lens/body combo.

A tripod with that height without legs extended for a 5-10 or so photographer is either going to be very heavy or very expensive or both.

A 5-10 photographer will have a level of 5-5 or so, and taking the head out of the equation you are still going to be a little over 5 feet.

In short, the less the center post need to be extended the better.

Where that puts the height requirement obviously depends on the individual.

That all being said, a tripod is a simple mechanism and it wouldn’t bother me to buy a used one.

They are plentiful on eBay, but shipping can be pricey.

Your local CRAIGSLIST might be a good option as you can lay hands on the product before paying.

If you go that route I’d suggest you make the meeting in a public place for both parties protection. Many police stations will allow you to meet there as well.

My $0.02 I hope this helps.

You might try also looking at aluminum instead of carbon fiber. The difference is weight and the cost is much lower for aluminum. I have an Oben and am very pleased with it.

Good point, and all things considered aluminum is not much heavier.

I have a friend who bought a CF tripod and carries a two pound weight to suspend from the bottom to stabilize it.

If your patient and signed up for daily deals from B&H, they have had the mountaineer on a really good sale about once or twice a year and other quality tripods too. I got a Benro TAD38C CARBON tripod for 50% discount.
