Probably the finest and most complete book about the history of photography. It covers the beginnings of photography through 160 years to the present. Originally published in France in1994, this is the “First English Language Edition-1998” published by Könemann and printed in Italy.

Rather than present the standard chronological survey, editor Michel Frizot chose to produce a volume that would encompass photography's historical evolution as well as its role in society with over 1000 black-and-white and full-color photographs and an extensive bibliography.

The 41 essays by 29 contributors detail European as well as the American photographic movements. There is much discussion of photography as art vs. photography as history and the commentary comes down firmly on both sides. War photos as well as images by Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Steichen appear, and there is even a section on "Photographs as Memories." Walker Evans and Lewis Carroll are included as well as entire portfolios of important contributions, including W. Eugene Smith.

This is a large hardcover book with 775 pages, measures 12” x 9.5” x 2.5” and weighs about 9 pounds. Photos show actual book. Dust jacket shows minor edge wear and interior page edges show some yellowing otherwise book is in exceptionally good condition.

Price is $30.00 with free shipping in US. If interested send me a PM.
