Overheating with an Olympus OM-D E-M1 III?

After about 30 minutes in warm (OK-hot) weather, the EVF on my OLY E-M1 III becomes non-functional. According to the specs, it's supposed to function up to 104 degrees. I never had this issue with a previous E-M1 II.

I've changed various EVF menu settings, to no avail, and am working with Olympus to try to resolve the problem.

Any suggestions?

Keep working with Olympus to resolve.

If it is a fully articulating screen, be sure it is open. If closed, it keeps heat within the body.

If you need a hot weather Micro 4/3 champ, the GH5 is your best bet. It can record video for hours in hot weather without overheating.

Have you set up your viewfinder as always on? The "normal" is to set the viewfinder as on only when the eye is at the viewfinder. We regularly get to the high 90s out here in Colorado and my E-M1 mkII also has no problems operating out in the sun. Haven't heard that the mkIII has had any heat problems. Hopefully nothing is seriously wrong with your new camera.

I live in AZ. 111 on Thursday this week. I was shooting outdoors for over 2 hrs. No issue with my EM1 MK3. Or my EM5 Mk3

Bill at Burkphoto may be right. I always open my rear screen as soon as I set up for shooting. Then the image always goes back and forth between the back screen and viewfinder depending whether or not my eye is at the viewfinder. If I don't set it up that way, I am always kicking myself for the times when I want to review an image better and the screen isn't available. Don't use the back screen to review very often. But if you are trying to be quick, not having the back screen open will slow down what should be "quick".

I don't know haw to set the EVF as "always on", so I don't know if I might have inadvertently done it. However, it does go off when my eye is removed from the EVF.

Good idea.

The problem continued today under very controlled conditions, occurring immediately when I turned the camera on inside my 95 degree shaded garage. Looks like some sort of hardware problem to me.

I would agree that it might be a hardware issue. i did an outside shoot, downtown, yesterday. It was 97 degrees outside and I had the camera on for over 1 hour and used the EVF to compose and shoot all the shots. and all was well., We then moved inside and shot a bunch of frames of the little girls all dressed up., only failures was a few adults were going nuts, trying to control their children. good luck, and let us know the outcome.

That IS a bit extreme for it to happen immediately.
