I managed to lose my expensive DJI drone the other day. It took great pictures and videos. Need to replace it with something cheaper but without a significant loss in picture quality. Any suggestions?

John, I would recommend that you post this in the "Drone Video and Photography" forum. You would probably get a better response there from other drone pilots.
By the way, how did you lose your DJI ?

Probably be well to mention which DJI drone you lost, as there are all kinds of them. Maybe a price range would be helpful too.

Probably a shotgun - not everyone favours drones.

If you decide to purchase another DJI Mavic Air2 I suggest you go directly to DJI. The one I purchased came with an insurance policy ($75) against loss or damage (crash). DJI will replace your unit two times per year for $75 each. Well worth the price for peace of mind.

I have a DJI Mavic Mini that I'm selling, if your interested. It's like new only used maybe 50 times and then on relatively short flights. Let me know if you are interested. Asking $350, but make an offer.

How did you lose it? Which drone was it?

"Possibly", not "probably". Plenty of drones end up in trees, on rooftops or in rivers. Only a very small percentage of lost drones are shot down by wackos.

Shooting at a drone is no different than shooting at an airplane to the FAA. Look up the penalties for shooting at an aircraft. The space above your property is controlled by the FAA, not the landowner.

Everyone does favor them when you need one.

I've seen several ads for DJI Phantom 4 Pro drones from about $500 lately. They'er great for close in photography. Fot anything long distance, I build my own.
