Lumix ZS-100 - A Nice Compact

I wanted a compact camera with a viewfinder that had a larger sensor than my Canon Powershot G9 so I ordered a used Lumix ZS-100 from B&H a couple of months ago. I've been using it as my go anywhere companion to have a camera with me at all times when I am out and about. Here are some examples of flower close-ups taken by it. I haven't had a chance to use it for landscapes or street shots, but so far I am pleased with it for the use I intended for it. Anyone wanting a pocketable capable camera with very good image quality should check out the Lumix ZS-100, or its new replacement, ZS-200.

All these images are handheld and SOOC with no post processing other than minor cropping for composition.

A very nice travel camera indeed!

I got the GM5 some years ago for similar reasons. The camera is about the same size and has similar evf, but interchangeable lenses and a M4/3 sensor. It came with a 23-45 mm zoom lens, and I bought a 45-200 mm. The latter makes the package larger but I can fit the tele in a separate pocket. It also makes an excellent travel and hiking companion.

Unfortunately Panasonic dropped it because they couldn’t sell enough at their asking price. I got it for half price in their clearance ($500) and have found it a gem.

I had tried a Sony before but had trouble going from its control approach to my Nikons. Somehow the Panasonic approach, although different from Nikon, is easier for me to go back and forth.

Very nice, Stan! I bought a used model from B&H in May, after seeing a main discussion forum topic on UHH

Very nice images. The colors OOC appear pastel like and very natural to my old eyes. I have always been intrigued by those Leica lenses made by Panasonic since Leica has put out excellent glass in their rangefinder cameras. I am not a Leica fan, given a choice my prefernce will go to Carl Zeiss and some years back I had a Sony with a Zeiss zoom that gave me excellent quality. I sold that camera and I regret I did.

I have no experience with those modern Sony compacts sporting Zeiss optics but I am going to say they most have very good quality. Robert Capa was right when he preferred using a Contax with Zeiss lenses for his assignments.

I use one as well and love it for travel. Also have a ZS 70. Slightly smaller sensor but huge telephoto (somewhat above 1000 mm) which came in handy photographing some rare penguins in New Zealand from a boat. Still easier than carrying a large camera half way around the world.
