Another Country Store and a movie

JRiepe posted a couple interesting photos of an old country store and it reminded me that there is another old country store close to me celebrating its 100th year in business, owned and operated by the same family. An interesting fact about the store, it and the surrounding area were included in the movie, "Unstoppable" with Denzel Washington and Chris Pine. Mr Riepe suggested he would like to see photos of it, so the wife and I took a little trip this afternoon to comply with that request.

Photo #1 is of the front of the store, #2 the RR crossing where, in the movie, a truck and trailer are struck by a large construction vehicle and pushed onto the tracks and get struck by a runaway train, #3 looks SE toward the oncoming train's start, and #4 looks NE in the direction the train continues traveling.

If anyone watches the movie, the store and the train truck collision is Scene 10 on the DVD.

Interesting shots. I would think these small family owned stores could stay in business only if they are in rural areas conveniently located for the locals with the nearest big box store being many miles away.

That is likely the case here. This store is in a very small town and several miles from any town with a "big box store."

Another fun fact about this town, it is the town in which the recording group, "The Vogues" grew up.

When I was a kid in the 50's I lived in a rural area and at that time not everyone had cars or even driver's license. Every Thursday the "rolling store", a truck with an assortment of groceries would make a trip out to the countryside for those without transportation to purchase their weekly grocery needs. My friend and I would meet it at one of the scheduled stops for our weekly treat. I would have a dime that my mother gave me and with that I would purchase a Big Time candy bar and a bottle of Pepsi.
