I love it! I think it's perfect! I love his colors...and expression!
I, too, am a cat lover and owner.

If anything you should be under saturating your captures prior to cat. surgery... cataracts are brownish yellow in color and warm up your image; after surgery the TRUE colors ( whatever those might be ), will be revealed... You might then oversaturate to get what you saw previously... Just ask Monet... he did not like post surgery results on his paintings. You are never going to duplicate what your eye has seen, so why not give it your own vision. I have just had both eyes done, so I am not just woofing... bob

True! Without exception every one I have met after cataract surgery has been shocked by the return of the blues.

My daughter and son in law are both optometrists. She is primary care who has referred many patients for surgery, my wife and I included. Her husband works for a large surgical practice in the North West. He is the OD who performs the measurements that prescribe the lens, IOL, that the surgeon inserts. They confirm the validity to MrBob's observation. Apparently, you are looking through a increasingly dirty as you age. I felt like I has never seen as well as I did after the surgery! Of course, I had no free will to select the surgeon. We had to fly almost coast to coast since we live in NY and they are in Olympia, WA. If your eye is otherwise healthy it is a ten minute procedure that they give you a narrated video of taken off the surgeon's microscope. Cool if you are not squeamish about someone poking your eye with a sharp knife.

But I digress. All that shouldn't account for "overcooking". And I might tone down the background a bit especially the bright spot because the draw the eye away from the subject. Personal opinion. No big deal.

In the example shown I'd say you're pushing it right up to the limit. I agree with your son - any more and it would be overcooked. The level of PP is always a matter of taste and yes, you're avoiding an overcooked look, but only just. Perhaps it's your intention to push it that close, but if you perceive the PP as moderate then you're underestimating how pronounced it is.

I forgot to add. They tell me that art historians use the color shift of the blues to date paintings.

Lift mid-tones. They are underexposed. The sense of over-saturation should moderate.

It's a beautiful photo, REJ. I do agree with Linda on the upper, left-side corner being distracting. I don't know what your cat really looks like and overcooked is subjective anyway. You might try turning the saturation down until your son says it looks the same as the cat, check that yourself and then turn it up until you're satisfied it's what you want. It is a personal and artistic decision.

I agree with the comments about cataract surgery. It's like taking a pair of brown sunglasses off. You can see blue again and everything is brighter. Perhaps you are emphasizing the color tones that are now diminished with your new eyes or not. It's your image and you have to be happy with it.

I think the germane comments are the brightness of the orange patch in the left rear, not the color itself that draws attention away from the cat's face which is the main interest.

I don't know what your eye surgery was but before I had cataract surgery my photos became greatly over-saturated because everything looked dim but I didn't know it. After the surgery I went back and did some serious adjustments on my favorites. Do you have a cataract problem maybe?
