Sunday, the first day of Fall, the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum opened their Spider Pavilion, and naturally I was there. For the previous six months, this enclosure has been the Butterfly Pavilion.
http://www.nhm.org/site/explore-exhibits/special-exhibits/spider-pavilionThis is one of several little dramas that I captured. Golden Silk Orbweaver spider (Nephila clavipes) silk-wraps a freshly-caught Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus).
Hand-held Nikon D5000 at ISO 200, with Nikkor 105G macro lens, 1/200-sec at f/16, full sun & Nikon SB-600 speedlight with O-Flash 3/4-circle Fresnel prism attachment.

That fourth one gives me a little bit of a shiver...nicely captured.
Life and death in the real world. Nice set.
nice shots and i am so jealous you have a Butterfly Pavilion.tom
I had not heard of a spider pavilion before. You indeed are fortunate. In Amarillo, TX, we have one garden center that has a "butterfly room". Oh well. What a story your series does tell.
#4 is my first choice. Nice capture. I might check out that exhibit.
Nice images, Doug. It's amazing how strong the web from that spider is.
Very nice and interesting set! I wonder if the toxin in the Monarchs juices help the spider? Or will he sample it and than discard it. Or is the spider impervious to the toxins?

From the tattered looks of this butterfly, he (scent glands on hind wings) had a long life, and met a fitting end.
