Does anyone remember the teacher pulling down the blinds and telling us to hide under our desks in case of a nuclear strike?

I do remember hearing a fairy tale that one in every five miles of Interstate Highways were supposed to double as an airfield in case of an invasion. I checked this on a couple of sites and found that it was indeed a tall tale. Or was it? As everyone knows there were never any little green men in Area 51.

That's why there are no politicians on Star Trek... because they don't work in Space either. (Sorry, Couldn't resist that one.)

Remember all those early tests with rockets blowing up on the pads, looping around in the air, and nosing into the ground?

Perhaps you remember the early Vanguard series when the US was doing its early rocket testing. It earned the nickame "civil service rocket" because it didn't work, and you couldn't fire it.

Yes, and all the kids brought in fall out shelters in for science projects. I was convinced the world was going to end then

Yep, I was a duck and cover kid. During this time my dad was building his house. Before he built the garage, which was at the other end of the lot, he put in a bomb shelter under it. I don't know how thick the cement was, but it was thicker than I could reach from the tip of my thumb to the tip of my little finger. He kept fresh food and water in it for years.

Trumbull is a four-story school--not including the basement-- and very large! I returned this summer and it STILL looks large to me! Google "Photos of Trumbull School Chicago" (The link I tried didn't work.)

I did what you suggested and took a look at your school. ZOWIE, scary place for a six year old!! I come from a small school, 76 in my graduating class. The building looked a little different than yours.

In 1964 I was introduced to a professional photographer who had built a fallout shelter and designed it for use as a photo lab when the bombs weren't falling.
He had a system where he could throw all the photo stuff out the door, if need be, so that the shelter could be used exclusively for people who used it.
It was a novel idea, but I can't think of anything around Gulfport Miss that was important enough to receive a nuclear bomb. He probably convinced the missus that a shelter was indeed necessary, and she agreed, happy to get all that photo stuff out of the house.

Awesome maintenance cost, too. One of the reasons it was taken out of service.
