Takes a determined snake to climb a tree...
I personally did not know snakes could climb a tree in this manner....
Got to tell you, I was out grilling on the patio when I first lived out here and saw a large snake climbing a tree after a bird nest, I think. It fell off a branch while I was watching - called my Wife to keep an eye on it while I got a snake eliminator. It wasn't venomous, so it lived. I had a part time job where I was in the woods a lot then - spent some time glancing up after that!
Snakes definitely climb trees to rob bird nests.

They can climb walls, too. A customer of where I worked brought photos for me to see of a snake working it's way up the wall of her house. She said she would never open a window again.

I had one drop out of a ceiling-mounted a/v vent onto my kitchen table. That was a real surprise. Don't ask me how it got there. I don't think I even want to know.
My in-law took a picture of a snake that climbed a wall, and wrapped around the house gecko.
Weirdest 2nd look kind of thing.

Figures. A Black Rat Snake.
Eats birds and squirrels. Raids nests and climbs very well, as seen.
How they can know there is a nest in the tree is beyond me, but I have seen them go right to a hole with a squirrel nest.

Snakes can climb well as long as there is some friction, which the tree bark clearly provides.

This is a black rat snake. I saw one sunning himself head-down on the side of a tree in a state park one time. As I watched, it slowly turned and climbed up the tree. The way it climbs is it expands parts of its body into grooves and rough spots in the bark to hold itself in place, and then would loosen other parts and stretch upwards. A park ranger explained that rat snakes are the only North American snakes that can climb trees.

That makes the big Montana Bull Snake I saw some kind of exception to the rule, I guess.

That's a nice looking snake and yes they are fabulous tree climbers. They eat birds in the nests often.
They are very good at sniffing out food. Nice capture.
I didn't know they cold do that, amazing.
