Good luck getting hold of the SX50, as it went out of production, replaced by the SX60. I had the SX50 for several years (until it it gave up the ghost) and found it to be the best bridge camera I ever had. I showed a friend (who said bridge cameras were 'toys') a shot of Jupiter and 4 of its moons..he was amazed. I have had a couple 50 * zoom bridge cameras (sony and panasonic) since, but none came anywhere near the quality of shots like the Canon SX50!

Thank you for sharing your experiences, Doddy.

I've used one since they came out years ago and still use it. My wife's camera died and she borrowed it for a trip to Spain. Upon return I asked her how she liked the camera, she replied we've bonded, she still using it today.

Looking for a camera for my wife who is an occasional picture taker, wants something affordable, easy to use, self-contained, takes a decent picture, isn't too big/heavy and doesn't require a bunch of extra attachments/lenses/gear to carry. I've heard that the Canon SX50 HS fits her needs. From those of you who own one, is that true? Does anyone have one that is in good working order, that they aren't using much and might want to sell? If so, please PM and let me know.
Thanks,

I have and still use a Canon SX50 and definitely recommend it.

I took these two shots with it.

Bultaco,
Have to laugh because I lose more stuff this way. My wife too loves to bind with many of the things I buy. ;-)

Does your wife really need a super zoom bridge camera? Is 50x zoom ability something she will regularly use? I find that almost all my photography with my SX50 is within about a 10-15x range. That falls within the range of some very capable and more compact cameras. You might want to look at some LUMIX or Sony compact cameras with a larger sensor than the SX50’s 1/2.3” and which are much less bulky and still very capable cameras.

If I remember correctly, the SX 60 has audio input jack. You might want to consider if she will be shooting video.

Your moon shot is amazing and a terrific example of capabilities. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and your photo.

I have read that out of the three, 40, 50, and 60, the 50 is the one to buy.

I googled “compact cameras with 1” sensors”. Take a look at these:

Thank you everyone for your help, offers and suggestions. I bought an SX50 yesterday. I hope my wife loves it. But if not, then It will likely replace my D5100 with all the extras and hopefully I can get back to enjoying photography with a single camera and lens combination capable of covering everything I do now and more. To tell the truth, as I’ve gotten older I’ve grown to hate dealing with all that gear and worrying with all the extra complexities of a DSLR. I used to enjoy photography. It used to be fun.

I know exactly how you feel. I sold my Canon 60D and lenses and feel liberated. I have the SX50 and several other cameras including the Panasonic LX7 which I also love. My most recent acquisition is the Canon G9X with a one inch sensor. Enjoying every minute with these smaller, yet reliable cameras. You will ove the Canon SX50.

StanMac,
Thank you for the suggestions. Lots to learn about and consider here. Unfortunately, however, in these days of Covid, I don’t have an extra $500-$1500 to spend.

Thank you, hj, for your thoughts and support. Always good to know I'm not alone in my thinking. I'll let you know how it goes.

I used this camera for about 5 years as a travel and hiking camera. I liked it so much that two of my friends bought it for themselves. Unfortunately it was stolen out of my car last March. I thought I would be able to get by without replacing it as I have three other cameras, but I missed it so much that two weeks ago I bought a refurbished SX60. They are basically the same...(the SX50 and SX60) but I like the SX60 better as Canon has rearranged some of the buttons and it works better for my hands. This is a great camera that fits most needs from macro to telephoto. Buy your wife the camera!!
