Hi All,
I'd like to get opinions from everyone here. Sorry about the length.
I have a Canon EOS Rebel T6i that has served me well over the last 4 years, but it has developed a problem. A few weeks ago, I plugged in one of my many data transfer cables to download some recent pictures and the cable felt "different" as I connected it. It seemed to go in to the connector "hard". It downloaded the pictures fine at that point. Yesterday, I plugged the cable in and it connected fine but there was no communication from the camera to the computer. I've tried different cables and different computers with no change. I am able to remove the memory card and by inserting it into a card reader in a laptop, download the pictures and then by copying them to a flash drive, move them to my desktop for editing.

My questions are,
1. Should I send the camera in to Canon and have it repaired? In these times I'm not a fan of not being able to take it to a repair shop in person and having to send to to them so they can send it to Canon.
2. Should I upgrade to a new camera? Maybe to a T8 or T9 as to keep my current lenses useful. I have several EF and EF-S lenses.
3. Should I upgrade to the Canon RP? I understand that I cam able to use my current lenses on the RP with the Canon adapter with a loss in MP.
Thanks,
Robert

canon offer great service. the question is weather the cost to repair is better served by upgrading. i have the R and love it.

Can you remove the memory card and connect to your computer? If your computer doesn't have a slot - an external reader is maybe $10. A lot less than a Canon repair.

Just saw a refurbished n on line for $300. That's less than the Canon repair.

Get a card reader for your desktop. I never use the transfer cable from the camera to the computer.

Hi All, br I'd like to get opinions from everyone ... (show quote)

Hey Robert, one of the weaknesses of cameras and USB-drives for all types of electronics is the risk of damage. It would seem you've damaged your USB port on the camera. That's not an indictment, just a comment. It will likely happen to us all as some point. Better the damage is the the camera's port than the more critical computer.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with a repair nor a replacement of a camera that fully functions in all other ways. As long as you can transfer to images using the SD card plugged into a target computer, the injured USB has no impact. You might consider a cheap SD card-reader to load the images directly to your target desktop rather than the process you're using for the laptop with the SD card slot. The card reader is way cheaper than a repair or new camera.

Regarding the EOS RP, you're incorrect regarding the EF-S and no loss of pixel resolution. The Canon equipment will automatically detect the EF-S lens and will crop the resulting image to the smaller image circle created by the EF-S lenses. For the EOS RP, that's a difference of 26MP full frame glory to 10MP cropped file, as compared to your 24MP images of your EOS T6i. At the de facto industry-standard 24MP, there's really no candidate 'upgrades' from the T6i, unless you want to start over with both a new full-frame mirrorless body and new full-frame mirrorless only lenses.

An SD card reader is your best play for this situation.

I would keep removing the card and using the card reader, it is no big deal. Another option is to explore downloading via Wi-Fi, I believe you have the capability.

I disagree. The 90D is a crop body so all his EF and EF-S lenses will work with NO loss of pixels and it has 32.5MP. The 80D is certainly an upgrade from the T6i even though it has only 24MP and currently is the same price as the RP.

However, an external card reader is certainly a much cheaper option.

if the 90D is a crop body his ef lens won't fit. his efs lens will fit on a full frame

WRONG - any EF or EF-S lens fits a crop body

You might want to shy away from these types of discussions as this comment is wrong in most every way.

I saw this quote on page 54 of the 90d manual:

Attaching and Detaching a Lens
All EF and EF-S lenses can be used. The camera cannot be used with RF
or EF-M lenses.

First I would try a different USB Cable. USB was designed so the the moving parts of connections are in the cable not device.

Those tiny USB ports (and the plugs on cables) are FRAGILE. Frequent plugging and unplugging, especially daily cell phone charging, causes eventual wear and misalignment of the the tiny contacts. Fortunately a digital camera already has the perfect work around, the removable memory card and a card reader. The contacts on a memory card are much more robust (though also subject to damage by careless insertion) than the tiny USB connectors. I have cameras that have never had a USB cable inserted.
