I do understand that everyone can't afford to own all of these things at once, and I have avoided naming brands, and each thing on the list can be had from very little money in relatively good nick up to stupid priced brand new.

I make no claims that others don't have good ideas on things that could/should make the list and I encourage others to add their own thoughts.

I also have eliminated emotional and family things from the list as IMHO they trump all of this, hence the list is limited to physical items.

Likewise I have not listed experiences, although all of these are quite capable of enhancing life experiences.

I also freely admit that these are all things I have owned, and many that I still own, which have aided me in enjoying life.

Things that every man should own at some point in their life:

A well maintained convertible sports car with a proper and smooth shifting manual transmission.

A smooth nibbed good writing fountain pen.

A fully manual SLR film camera.

A good quality telescope.

A completely mechanical wristwatch.

A quality pair of western boots.

A good quality pocket knife.

A target pistol capable of putting 6 shots inside a circle the size of a baseball at 25 yards.

A trophy that they have earned.

A vehicle with at least 8 cylinders and 300 horsepower.

A completely analog home stereo receiver and turntable.

Premium seats at a professional sporting event.

A good quality rifle and scope capable of hitting a circle the size of a baseball at 100 yards.

A good quality, well balanced low deflection pool cue.

A well maintained four wheel drive pickup truck.

A well fitting pair of all leather shoes.

Something complex that they themselves have major repaired/restored.

An accurate compass.

A book printed before they were born.

A good shortwave radio.

A good quality set of hand tools.

A good quality outdoor grill.

A personal reading library.

A properly tailored suit.

A good running motorcycle.

A proper fitting fedora.

A bottle of quality liquor.

A proper fitting leather jacket.

A proper fitting pair of driving gloves.

A bottle of REAL maple syrup.

Please, feel free to join in.

I have owned most of the things on your list. The few that I haven’t is because they don’t interest me. Items such as a good bottle of liquor, motor cycle, four wheel drive pick up truck.

Your list was a memory tickler.

Thanks

Chuck

I don’t do professional sports. And now I have a reason.

But I do have most of the list including two motorcycles, two four wheel drives, and a V10 engine that puts out more than 300HP. And lots of guns...you aren’t allowed in Idaho without some and, as my good friend days, “If you know how many guns you have it ain’t enough!”

I have owned a lot of those things, maybe most, but there are several I have no interest in.

Although my father and mother were very interested in sports (my father was a pitcher for a NY Giants farm team until he broke his elbow), I was completely turned off when it came to sports. I compensated by taking pictures of the High School games. I never got over that indifference.

Being a pragmatist, cars with big engines have never been a draw for me. Also not particularly interested in style, in cars or clothing or food or women.

I recognize some value to some things that don’t interest me so I have no objection to others having an interest.

Don't have the money to own a sport car. Pens is a pen to me. Have a number fully manual SLR camera. Have a very good telescope made by Bausch & Lomb. Have a collection of Swiss Army Knifes all made in Switzerland. Had a Browning's P-35 50+ years ago, today have no use for a pistol. Had a vehicle with 8 cylinders and 300 hp. Sold it for money to go to college. Had a stereo receiver and turntable gave it away to friend son when I moved from New York City. Had a number of very good shortwave radios, today shortwave radios are dead in the water. Have own a number of rifles, all go. Maple syrup can get all I want from a friend
of my who owns a sugar house in the woods behind my house. Have had two cars shoot from under me, I have no use for a motorcycle. If I was on a motorcycle not in a car I would not be here. That it folks.

I have had some, maybe most of the things listed. I have no use for some, such as a motorcycle.
I had a 79 or 80 model Triumph Spitfire convertible. It was a piece of junk. No power, and cost a fortune to keep it running. Between me and my brother, we have enough tools to start a hardware store.
You forgot to mention good binoculars. I have a Celestron spotting scope but I wouldn't care to wear it around my neck. I also value a good stainless steel Revere Wear coffee pot. Gotta have that morning caffeine.

Great list, LWW. The only things I didn't have on your list were the premium seats at a sporting event and a shortwave radio, although I did have several CB Radios. As far as a rifle, I had a Winchester, think it was a model 1886, but it was a .45-70 ... not sure I could hit a circle the size of a baseball at 100 yards, but I think I could stop most V8's...oh, sorry, didn't have a scope.

You're right about having a car with a V8 and 300hp. Had a '62 Vette that was tweaked...put out over 400hp.

About the only thing I'd add to the list is a good wine opener.🍷

I do understand that everyone can't afford to own ... (show quote)

I have had very little of this list.
Guess I have been deprived of the material things in life.
I do have great memories though:
Climbing a cliff with no rope.
Jumping out of several types of aircraft.
Rappelling out of a helicopter.
Saving people's lives with a team.
Pulling a family from a crashed burning car.
Saving a drowning swimmer.
Spending time with a survivor of Hitlers Germany talking for hours over years about it.
Finally designing many types of buildings from churches, schools, homes to mega resorts for the edification, education, comfort to pleasure of thousands of people.

I currently have, or have enjoyed 98 percent of your list.
But my Mercedes convertible has an automatic transmission, please forgive me.

I've just eliminated all those things that I feel are unnecessary in my life.

I “own” the privilege of having 3 responsible, successful, and caring children along with 5 intelligent, energetic, & empathetic grandchildren l.

I’ve owned most of your list but no suit (I was a college professor and suits were taboo) and no hand guns. However, I did own a lever-action, breech-loading Winchester 94. My avatar shows one of my current two 8 cylinder, 300+ HP cars; my Mini is a paltry 180 but it doesn’t weigh very much.

I own a manual 5 speed sports car, but it's a hardtop. I hate the sun shining down on my head.
I would add to the list:
a custom made bicycle
a set of cast iron pans
a set of heavy duty stainless steel pots including a large stock pot
a high end espresso machine (Olympia Cremina)
a high end coffee grinder (Mazzer Super Jolly)
a home coffee roaster (Hottop)
a set of white Wedgewood dinner plates
custom handmade wooden bureau and bookcase
antique oriental carpets
a German made pressure washer for detailing your car (Krantzle)
a Morgan horse and Stüben English saddle
custom made riding boots
Wilson Combat Standard 870 shotgun

Interesting title to this post..’every man and many women.’ Not much on your list of interest or importance to me. Don’t see many/any women chiming in. Wonder if the post reflects UHH membership fairly well—gender, age, affluence, culture. Just some reflections, not criticism. I won’t be suggesting a list. Have a full day ahead. Have a good day all!
