This is a newbie, should-have-thought-it-out-first question. I did the initial formatting on my San Disk card, took a host of pictures, then downloaded to my computer all of the images I wanted to keep, then formatted the card again for the next series of images. I then realized that I may have made a major blunder in formatting the card after saving the images. I now no longer have the convenience of taking the card to Target and printing an image. I do not print out enough pictures to warrant buying a photo printer and my present Epson, while it will print pics, grinds exceedingly slowly, uses copious amounts of ink and prints at best a so-so picture. Would it not be better for me to buy more low-capacity cards and save the cards without reformatting rather than use my higher capacity card and reformatting?

You down loaded the images so just send the ones you want to print to Target, or download to a USB thumb drive and take that to Target.

buying a thumb drive for this purpose is probably the best solution. Cheap SD cards put at risk your images/original pictures. Not a good idea. Find a way to save your images, off computer. If you don't shoot often, a higher capacity thumb drive might be a first step.

Eventually, you might want to investigate a higher capacity (1 GB to 5 GB) external hard drive. If you have a Costco near you, and you already have a membership, the Seagate 5GB HD price will drop to $89 on August 5th through Aug. 30th. It's a great bargain - great value (capacity/technology/performance) and great technology (relatively high speed performance) for the bargain price per GB of "off line storage".

Are you familiar with copying files using your computer operating system?
If you only have one card right now, get a couple and you can use one for taking to the store.
And you'll have backup cards.
(you can always put them back on the card, just keep in mind where they were.)

(I upload mine to Costco via the internet.)

Just pick the ones you want from your download files on your PC and copy them to a thumb drive to take to Target and have them printed.
Don't you want to PP your photos 1st before having them printed?

will

If you are in a real pinch and only have the one card, you can just pop it back into the computer. Then transfer the file(s) you want to take to Target and make prints. After you are all done, pop the card back in the computer and delete the files. Then pop it back into the camera.

The process of culling should get rid of the "definitely not" ones, leaving you with the "maybes". Create storage space on your hard drive for the maybes. After you've gone through the process of deciding which ones to print you should be clearer about which ones are worth keeping. If you still have some maybes after that, review them at some later date when you don't feel so invested in them and it'll be easier for you to be objective and realistic when re-assessing them. Have enough storage space that you can do that without worrying about it (it's money well spent).

I always reformat my cards after the images are downloaded to my computer and the computer has completed its daily automatic backup. That way I have at least two copies of the original image. That way I can reuse the cards. If I want to take the images somewhere I simply export them to a flash drive.

Just like you copied/moved the images from the card to your computer, you can copy/move them from your card to the computer as well.
My son spends a lot of time in an area where there is no wi-fi or cell-service (for emergencies he has a satellite phone, $4.00/minute).
For that reason, we often share our photos on SD cards. They keep the envelope nice and flat, even with the card in the original carton cover. And postage is regular letter-post. Of course the card does not go into the mail until the photos have been copied to computer.

I’ve never used Target for photos, but don’t they have an option to order online? Every other major retailer with photo services does. You just upload the photos you want and when they’re ready you go pick them up. No waiting around or having to make two trips.

Walgreen does that and produces some very good results. You email them a decent resolution photo, and the process it in a matter of hours. This may vary from store, and not all stores have the capability. I have had very good luck with Walgreens. A lot of folks also report good things about Costco.

Yes, Costco does great prints and if you’re not happy they’ll reprint for free.

As was said before, Put your card back to the download place and revers your download back to the card.

Why not have a second card or thumb drive just for bringing them to the store for prints? Copy the ones you want from either the computer or camera. If you want to go from camera, use a USB cable.

A useful workflow:

Take some photos
Download the files from the card to your computer
Make any adjustments you want to make (cropping, brightness, contrast, etc.)
Back everything up.

After you back everything up you can reformat your card. Don't do it before backing up.

As far as printing is concerned, you don't need to do that from the camera card. You can copy the file (with adjustments if needed) to any portable memory thingy. A USB thumb drive is probably the cheapest and most convenient.
