GAS attack on July 9th morning. When Canon launched the R5 and RF 100-500 lens, i pre-ordered both. Now pondering over what do i keep and what to sell. I have a Canon 7D mk II , Canon 100-400 II , Canon 5D Mk IV , Canon 16-35 f4 IS L. I was considering selling the Canon 7D mk II and the 100-400 II but retaining the 5D mk IV and 16-35. As i thought I could use the R5 with the 100-500 for bird and wildlife photography which i love doing. And use the 5D mkIV with 16-35 for shooting landscapes. Thought i also take suggestions from my fellow hoggers here on their thoughts. Please let me know your honest comments. Thanks.

You could always retire from the bird photography. Thaz been done to deth ten times over. That gets rid of a heavy lens and lets you experience nature more directly, being less distracted.

The 5D-4 should be cool for landscapes with all those MP but when your R5 arrives you can compare them and judge whether it’s worth keeping both.

Unless you feel you have a real need for a back-up camera I would sell both the 7DII and 5DIV, after you have had the R5 long enough to be sure you are happy with it. With the adapter you can use the 16-35 on your R5 so I would hang onto it for now. I can tell you though that the RF 15-35 f/2.8 L is a sweet lens. Once you see how the 100-500 does for you then you may want to sell the 100-400. Use the money to buy the RF 24-105 f/4 L. Then you will be covered from 16mm up to 500mm.
I bought the R about 18 mo ago and haven't looked back since. Sold my 7DII and 5DIV and don't miss either. Sold all my EF lenses except my 100-400 L II and 100 L Macro and have bought, so far, 4 RF L lenses. All are superb. Haven't made up my mind yet about the 100-500. Will probably buy the R5 in a few months and sell the R.
Having one camera body works fine for me and removes the temptation to carry a lot of extra gear. One of my favorite places to shoot is on the Hudson River and now, most times, I just take my R, my 100-400 with adapter, and my 24-105.

Sell all the old DSLR equipment, add the RF 15-35L. Don't let a mirror hold back your photography.

Assuming the r5 delivers on its promise, there is no reason to have any non rf compatible gear. I'd say keep the ef lenses of top quality if they fill a gap, to use with the adaptor while you transition to all rf lenses. Since you will have many megapixels you can crop your birding shots similar to having the greater equivalent reach of a crop camera, and the 100-500 is compatible with the new 1.4x and 2x extender, supposedly with auto focus intact.

All in.

If it was me and I could financially afford it I would keep it all for now.

Thank you all for your responses. Now will have to wait and see when B&H will deliver my pre-order. After the R5 and RF 100-500 arrives will decide on what to sell from my existing gear. Thanks again.

Congratulations.
That combo should be a most excellent one for birds and wildlife with the new DPAF II and amazing eye tracking that the DPAF II does.
I saw a video on it comparing other systems and it was amazing. Also it showed the new IBIS was much quicker than has been available prior to this time and much smoother.
Lucky guy.

I would sell the 5DIV.... the R5 makes it the most redundant of your DSLRs.

Which of the Canon EF 16-35s do you have? Depending up that, you might take different paths. If you use the EF 16-35mm f/2.8 first or second version, you should definitely consider trading it in for the RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM. If you have the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III or the EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM, either of those are excellent lenses that you might want to continue using for the time being. If you don't already have it, get the EF to RF lens adapter to use eitehr of those 16-35s on the R5. That will work fine for now. If yours is the f/4 version, eventually I expect Canon will come out with an RF version of the f/4 wide angle zoom and you might upgrade then, so that you no longer need to use the adapter.

I see you've pre-ordered the RF 100-500mm. Once you have that and it's proven itself on the R5 you might consider selling off your 7DII and 100-400 II, as well. But, for serious "birding", I wouldn't recommend letting that combo go until you have both the R5 and the lens in hand, and are happy with their performance. I imagine the R5 will have an APS-C crop mode that can approximate the "added reach" of the 7DII with the 100-400 II.... to serve essentially the same purpose. However, you can accomplish the same thing with simple crops in post-processing. I always recommend that instead of in-camera cropping. There's no difference between them, except after an in-camera crop you don't have option to change your mind or experiment with as many alternatives, compared to cropping in post-processing.

Ultimately, the R5 should be versatile enough to replace BOTH your cameras. Unless you feel the need for a backup, I see little need to keep them once you're able to get all the lenses you need in the R-system and are confident in the camera's function for your purposes.
