When I was stationed at Beale AFB in the 70’s, the Habu revetments were just across the tarmac from our U2s. It was a bit unnerving to see them being towed out to the end of the runway for engine start dripping fuel. We could always tell when they were going to launch as the KC 135s had already left to take up a refueling position. The SR had to refuel within 15 minutes of takeoff or they would drop from the sky.

On static display, along with U-2, at museum in Palmdale, CA. Museum is closed for now, due to virus. aircraft are visible from the road.

My favorite in the jet group. New technology for the time and unsurpassed for decades.

Back in the late 60s I was a FAA radar controller at Edwards AFB during the world record sr71 flight from England to Los Angeles. That plane flew over Edwards to LA at its record speed. At the same time I had another sr71 up locally who had just completed a high speed run and was descending to land at Edwards. The landing sr72 was slowing down and was much faster than the record sr71 who was overhead at the time. The true speed of that bird was classified and enormous.

👍 Awesome aircraft!!! My Dad was a jet engine technician on the SR when he/we were at Edwards AFB, 1967-1971. A lot of cool aircraft there! Plus, Rocket Hill was about 18mi away. You definitely knew when they were testing the Saturn V engines! The annual base golf championship was opened by an SR flyover/sonic boom. Wonder what THAT cost!

What has been most fascinating about the SR-71 to me is that it was designed in the 1950s. long before just about anyone knew about the technologies incorporated in the plane. And it still holds several records for speed and altitude nearly 55 years after it first flew.

I knew a guy who was on the bridge of a Navy ship when a SR-71 flew over. It was on the screen for one radar sweep.
