Tips for Photoshop CS5 (pictures below)

Hello everyone, it's Max & I just wanted to get a little background information on using Photoshop CS5.
I just bought it & I've been using it independently. I just wanted to post a picture to show if this is
an okay way or may I say a good start for a beginner. NOTE: I was just playing around with the color by
starting at black and white & lighten the color.
Would love some tips or opinions. Thank you~

You should get a lot of help and opinions on this one. Its a good shot to work with.

Edits.
1) no catch light in the eyes.
2) Eyes are dark and unappealing.
3) Skin could be softened a tad. (lots of blemishes)
4) Background although blurred somewhat is distracting(Bright monitors)
5) color seems a bit off on my monitor. Maybe a tad to warm.
6) could have the light brought up a bit.
At the shoot
7) Looks like no flash was used or straight on. Move the flash off camera from a 45 degree angle and soften with a shoot through umbrella. Or possibly use the monitor as a light source. I've seen that done before.
You would get a lot of edits on this if you approached it that way. Nobodys going to steal your shot. They may borrow it to make it better. Then you could ask what they did. Its a better learning approach IMHO. THis is what I have done in the past.
