For those with Nikon mirrorless cameras. What experience can you share concerning the use of regular mount lenses with the adapter. I have a D750 and a D7100 and quite a herd of lenses. The upcoming Z5 is catching my interest but there is no way I could afford the body and a slew of Z-mount glass. I would be keeping the other 2 cameras. Thoughts? I would probably get one of the available "kit lenses" but that would be it at least for a while.

You should carefully review each of your Nikon lenses and confirm whether each specific lens will maintain autofocus compatibility with the FTZ adapter. See the documentation at Nikon's site and / or online discussion of the issues for older lenses. Consider too why you would maintain any DSLRs or any DX-style lenses, given the superior image quality of Z-mount lenses on a full-frame sensor.

I have a Z6 and both Nikkor and Tamron lenses which work flawlessly with the FTZ adapter with the very unfortunate exception of my Tamron 90mm macro lens for which there is not (and looks like there won't be) the firmware needed for it to be used with the adapter. I recently bought my first Z lens, the 85mm 1.8, and being able to use it without the adapter really cuts down on the weight which has me looking forward to gradually transitioning to more native lenses. Your Nikkor lenses will work fine and you just need to check for the compatibility of any third party lenses.

Thoughts? Got one, anywho ...

It appears you need and want the FTZ converter. The Z5 plus an FTZ currently costs $1650. The Z6 with FTZ (plus xqd card and bag) costs $1850. Can you find an extra $200 ? Perhaps by skipping the kit lens ?

I would take the suggestion to carefully review my lenses and the available documentation, just in case a comment like no autofocus with older AF and AF‑D lenses, many of which Nikon still sells new today applies to any of my own lenses as candidates for the FTZ Adapter. But, maybe that's just me?

Having intentions of a Z, what I’ve come to understand so far is that lenses with aperture rings will NOT have any AF ... and vice versa.

Acoarst, as a body for my Ai lenses the lenses will lose none of their original function, so that in itself is, for me, an upgrade from my D750. I gain IBIS and the focus magnifier, and lose nothing.

They do, but they don’t have auto focus. The AF-S work with auto focus, although the way manual focus works with the Z6 is so impressive I’ll never go back to auto focus.

The Z5 will have 2 SD card slots compared to Z6-Z7 having a single XQD slot. This might be a + for the Z5.

I have used my Z6 w/FTZ and Nikkor 300mm F/4.0 PF.

You said that they will function but they will not function.
That is untruthful and a gross misrepresentation that unknowing people could depend on and then get screwed.
Mounting and function are worlds apart.

Most of you Nikon auto focus lenses will work fine with the adapter. However, your older D lenses will not auto focus. I am including a image of the type of D that will not auto focus. Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

There are some lenses with aperture ring that do have built in AF motor and those will work but those are rare. Most of the lenses with built in AF motor are G type.

I have a question why is it you use this word Acoarst? For me it’s just plain silly to use we’re not making Anagrams.

Paul has given you great advice. Here is Nikon's list of lens compatibility.
https://www.nikonimgsupport.com/na/NSG_article?articleNo=000042681&configured=1&lang=en_SG
You will have to dive deeper for other mfg lens compatibility.
And, if you do buy a Z5 kit, I would carefully consider what lenses you currently have in order to evaluate the best kit lens to purchase. If it were me, I would go with the 24-200. And, again, Paul has taken this to another level suggesting that you may actually be selling your other equipment once you are into the Z camera.
User ID asks you to 'trust' what most of us who switched to Z already have done. I purchased the Z6 and have subsequently sold off 1/2 of my F mount lenses and kept only those that I find worthwhile to keep. You certainly have more equipment than I had; which will more than pay for your Z purchase and more. Most of us have found that keeping equipment we never use serves no purpose other than allowing us to upgrade a marginal or no cost if we are willing to part with them.
Good luck and have fun whatever you choose to do.

I purchased the Z6/24-70/FTZ kit back in Nov and love it. I think it was about $2300 back then. I've used the FTZ with my Nikkor 50 g, 85 g, 28-300 g, and 70-200 e. All worked flawlessly. My Tamron 16-300(DX) would not auto focus (just did this as a test). If purchasing today, the slow (4.5 fps) continuous shooting rate of the Z5 would be a deal breaker for me. I also have a D7200 which now I only use with my 200-500. My go to camera is the Z6.

Good luck,

Alan
