A friend asked me my opinion of DigiKam, which apparently has a major new release out.
I had to confess I never had heard of it until his query. But looking into it a bit, it looks like it might be a pretty good photo organizer and library program. And it is freeware.
I could use a good organizer, but I am wondering how intuitive and easy it is to use? I've had enough of steep learning curves.
I would very much appreciate honest comments on the program, whether favorable or negative.
Thanks!
I use it exclusively to import raw files and as an asset management system on linux. It is very fast and fairly easy to use with some minor reading in the user manual. If I'm not mistaken, it uses MySQL as the default database which can handle very large catalogs and improves speed on larger collections.
Also, the tagging functionality is pretty easy to use and carries over to editors that use XMP sidecar files so you wouldn't have to re-tag anything in your editor. Although it can take a little while to set up the hierarchy of the tags, and it's up to the user on how to best set it up for their needs. The great thing is it can be modified later down the road, and all commits to the database can be pushed to the entire catalog.
I don't know how it works on Windows or MacOS, but on linux it is fantastic.
Thanks for your comments!
I use it for years and it's a very good photo application. One of the best. Fast, intuitive and free.

I used it years ago. Switched to jAlbum because I publish albums on my web site. Digikam is likely to be much better for organizing. I did publish one album with Digikam but it was quite simple and just loaded originals, makimg the album excessively largevfor viewung on theveeb.
