This is a Black Carpenter Ant that I found while throwing out the trash this morning. I scooped it up in my hand and brought it in and prepared it for a focus stacking session. They don't like to be held and the tend to bite. I've done others in the past and they make convenient and interesting specimens.

Most likely Camponotus pennsylvanicus.
They are fairly widespread.
Next segment of Shogun in the DVD player and queued.
Goodnight, Gary, all.

Thanks, Bill. I see these ants here quite often although I see more of the tiny Sugar Ants. We also have the Argentine Ants here now and I have learned that they are an invasive species and the ones that I have come across in the woods appear to have quite an attitude when I uncover them.

And I'll add my WOW to Johnny's! These buggers can deliver a painful bite but apparently don't have venom. 😲

Thanks, Donna. I can attest to the fact that they bite which is like getting pinched although luckily they do not squirt acid.

Fire ants are smaller, but you wouldn't know it from the pain they inflict, and the bites fester and become sores.

Donna, that is ever so true. They pack a wallop for their size. On a trip to Arkansas last year I picked up a board that was in the way of parking our RV and it had a nest of fire ants under it and they were on me in a flash. As I brushed them off my hands they got me with their acid and I had blisters and the pain to with it for the better part of a week.

Vicious things they are, and apparently they made their way into this country though the port here in Mobile.
