Suggest you go to Nikon's website and look under Support for your camera model. The instructions are pretty straight forward.

At a high level:
Assure your battery is fully charged. Download the file and the instructions from Nikon. Nikon tends to give a 'container' file that you save locally to your computer and then you need to 'extract' the firmware file. Place the firmware file on the camera's SD card at the root outside any folders on the card. Turn off the camera, install the SD card, turn on the camera and let it update the firmware when prompted.

I fully appreciate your anxiety as I felt the same with my 5600.
One item I do not know about is if you need to update multiple versions. This may require installing each in order if the latest is not cumulative. Someone else on here can probably answer that.
I watched several YouTube demonstrations (Steve Perry is especially good and he uses a Mac)
I downloaded and read the Nikon instructions several times over a few days to be sure I understood. Actually walked through to be sure I fully understood exactly what they said.
Then I printed the instructions out (used about 3 times more paper than necessary).
Freshly charged full battery.
Memory card formatted in camera (not computer) -- which I always do.
Card Reader
Followed the directions one step at a time. No rush.
It was uneventful.
Though I am now comfortable with the process, next time I will watch Steve Perry again, print out the instructions, and do it step-by-step. It worked fine that way.

You are going to be downloading a file from the Nikon website, then copying it to the ROOT DIRECTORY of your memory card. Once that's done, just follow the instructions on the site. There will also be prompts on the rear display of your camera.
I do not have experience with your camera, but one thing to watch out for in the instructions is that some Nikon models require that only one of the <usually> two update files be on the memory card at a time. Copy one of the files to the card, follow the instructions, delete the update file from the card, load the other file, then follow the instructions again. If this is specified in the instructions, it is important, but often overlooked.
While it is extremely important to follow the directions, the camera is not going to electrocute you or remove your fingers. So pay attention and use care, but don't hyperventilate over this.

I believe Nikon firmware updates are cumulative, so you only need the most recent.

As a FYI, I typically hold off doing ANY firmware upgrades for at least 90 days after a release. All too often a undetected bug is found by the folks doing downloads right after a release...I hate being a tester

Tried Tried no luck on update firmware. New d5600. Format 2 different cards about 4-5 times, even while on phone with Nikon Tech. Try this, Try that, even my smarter then me wife could not do it. Nikon Tech it might be the camera, send it in Nikon will do it free. yea right. Going to a Nikon friend at Best Buy maybe he can help. This thing about loading from root may help as well. Anybody reading this, my talents are not in writing so bare that in mind please before sending a bad remark. Thanks Framerman.
